Newark, N.J. (4/11/13) – Sophomore Charles Thielmann tossed a complete game shutout as the #1/2 Kean University baseball team breezed past Rutgers-Newark by the final of 10-0.
Thielmann (5-1) scattered four singles and one walk in an efficient 98 pitch outing. He also struck out four as he faced just four batters over the minimum. Kean improves to 22-5 overall and 6-1 in NJAC play in their first game since being ranked in the top spot in the D3baseball.com Top 25 poll. The Cougars are riding a six game winning streak.
After scratching across two runs early thanks to four walks, Kean pulled away scoring seven runs in the fifth and sixth frames. The Cougars put up a three spot in the fifth as senior Nick Ramagli lined a one-out RBI single and junior Joe O'Connor lofted a sacrifice fly to center. Junior Nick Zucchero followed with an RBI double down the right field line, giving Kean a 5-0 lead.
In the sixth, junior Tyler Smarslok dunked a bases-loaded single into right while sophomore Andy Lopez lined a sacrifice fly. O'Connor recorded his third RBI of the day, with a double to left.
O'Connor and Smarslok finished with two hits a piece while junior Shane Alvarez collected a game-high three hits (3-for-5) with a double, run scored and RBI.
Scarlet Raiders' Brian Kokos and Steve Tamayo each tallied two hits to account for all of Rutgers-Newark's (7-19, 2-5 NJAC) offense in the loss.
The two teams are scheduled to matchup again on Friday at Jim Hynes Stadium at 3:30 p.m., weather permitting.
