FOREST GROVE – Starting pitchers Rob Dittrick (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii) and Nick Morton (Fr., Burbank, Calif.) turned in a pair of stellar performances while Nick Tasaka (Sr., Hawaii Kai, Hawaii) and Charlie Gaff (Fr., Stockton, Calif.) came through at the plate as Pacific swept a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader from Whitworth Saturday at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.
 
Dittrick turned in his second complete game performance of the season, allowing one run on 10 hits to lead the Boxers to a 2-1 victory in the opener.  Morton, making his third start of the season, threw seven shutout innings to keep the Pirates stymied in an 8-1 win in the nightcap.
 
Tasaka led Pacific at the plate by going 5 for 9 in the two games with two runs and three RBIs, including three hits in the second game.  Gaff went 4 for 6 in the two games.  He went 2 for 2 in the opener, which included an eighth inning triple that scored the winning run.
 
Pacific improved to 11-18, 8-9 NWC with the win, while Whitworth dropped to 10-19-1, 5-12 NWC.
 
GAME 1 – PACIFIC 2, WHITWORTH 1
The opener shaped into a pitcher's duel over the first five innings between Dittrick and Pirates' starter Dan Schiebe.  Whitworth squandered a scoring opportunity in the third, leaving Nick Motsinger at third base.  Pacific had a chance to break the ice in the fourth when Logan Moen (Sr., Brier, Wash.) reached second on an error with no outs, but Schiebe coaxed the next two batters into infield flies and Austin Gallagher (So., Lake Oswego, Ore.) into a fielder's choice to end the frame.
 
Whitworth finally broke through in the sixth.  Gerhard Muelheims led off with a double down the right field line, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on Jeremy Druffel's single to right.  Pacific tied it up in the seventh as Gallagher walked to lead off the frame and pinch-runner Grant Rogers (So., Clackamas, Ore.) scored on Tasaka's single to left.
 
After Dittrick quelled another Whitworth threat in the eighth, Pacific scored the winning run thanks to an error in the home half of the inning.  Anson Arakaki (Sr., Hilo, Hawaii) reached on the miscue with two outs and scored on Gaff's triple to the center field.
 
Dittrick improved to 3-3 on the season with his one run on 10 hits, striking out four.  Jason Renner took the loss in relief for Whitworth, allowing the winning unearned run on one hit.  Schiebe allowed one run on four hits, walked six and struck out two seven innings.  Tasaka and Gaff each had two hits to lead Pacific, while Muelheims went 3 for 4 to pace the Pirates.
 
GAME 2 – PACIFIC 8, WHITWORTH 1
After relying on late-inning heroics to win the opener, the Boxers moved to back-up their starting pitcher early in the second game.  Tasaka singled with one out in the first, Walker Olis (Fr., Burlington, Wash.) followed with a single up the middle and Moen walked to load the bases.  Michael Arakaki (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii) grounded into a fielder's choice to score Tasaka and Gaff followed with a single to right to score Olis. 
 
The Boxers added one run in the second as Anson Arakaki doubled to right center field and scored on Donnie Bradley's (So., Beaverton, Ore.) single to left center field.
 
Morton needed to work out of jams in both the sixth and seventh.  In both innings the Pirates placed runners on second and third with one out and in both cases the Boxers were able to escape leaving the runners stranded.
 
Pacific truly put the game away with their three-run seventh inning.  Bradley opened with a one-out bunt single and Tasaka scored him with a gap double to right center field.  Olis reached on an error and both runners advanced 90 feet on a ground out.  Michael Arakaki singled with a line drive to third base to score Tasaka and Gaff singled through the left side to score Olis.
 
Anson Arakaki was hit by a pitch with one out of the eighth and proceeded to score on Bradley's triple to right center field.  Bradley then plated the Boxers' last run when Tasaka singled through the left side.  Whitworth scored their only run of the game in the ninth when pinch-hitter Blake Thoren singled and scored on a wild pitch.
 
Morton threw seven shutout innings to improve to 2-1 on the season, allowing six hits and striking out four.  Carson Blumenthal took the loss, dropping to 3-4 on the year.  He allowed six runs, four earned, on 12 hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 6.2 innings.  Bradley, Tasaka and Olis all went 3 for 5 to lead the Boxers.  Muelheims and Erik Nikssarian had two hits apiece to lead the Pirates.
 
The two teams will conclude their three-game series with a single game on Sunday.  First pitch is scheduled for noon.
