KINGS POINT, N.Y. – CUA split a Landmark Conference doubleheader with Merchant Marine Academy (13-10, 8-6) on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals (20-11, 7-4 LC) dropped a 6-3 decision in game one, before exploding for a 10-1 win in the nightcap. Five Cards finished with more than one hit on the day, while Kevin Farley threw a complete-game, five-hitter to lead CUA to the game two win.

In game number-one, CUA struck first with two runs in top bottom of the 1st inning. Stefan Poggioli ripped a solo homer with one out, and with two outs, Chris McCloud added a round tripper of his own. It marked the second straight game in which McCloud homered.

The Mariners got one of the runs back in their half of the 1st, but CUA went back in front by two with Mike McFarland's sac fly in the 2nd.

The Mariners took their first lead of the day with a three-run 4th. Jake Martin delivered the big blow, hitting a two-run home run to left center, and a fielder's choice allowed the other run to cross.

USMMA added single runs in the 5th and 6th and held on for a 6-3 win.

Timothy Arner went all seven innings on the mound for USMMA, striking out one and allowing only four hits.

Colin Kelly suffered the loss for CUA, after giving up five runs in five innings.

USMMA went in front 1-0 in game number-two, but CUA quickly took control of things with five runs in the next half inning.

With one on and one out, Brendan Breslin singled, and a passed ball allowed both runners to move up one base. A walk to McFarland loaded the bases and Charlie Dillon followed with a two-run single to make it 2-1.

A Pat DeToro single brought in two more runs, and and he later scored on another passed ball, giving CUA a 5-1 advantage.

An error by the home team in the 4th allowed Dillon to score, and a four-run 5th all but clinched the win for the Cardinals.

Another error got the big inning going for CUA and with the bases loaded, Breslin delivered a three-run double to up the lead to eight.

McFarland's second sacrifice fly of the day then made it 10-1 and the Cardinals were on their way to victory.

It was Farley's complete game that paved the way for CUA, as the junior hurler went all seven innings, struck out five and allowed just the one run.

Cameron Stadele suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits in 4.1 innings.

On Sunday, the teams will close out their three-game set with a nine-inning contest beginning at 11 a.m.
