Lapatin, Hubbard & Foley Lead RIC Past Curry, 5-3

Milton, Mass.-Senior shortstop Zach Hubbard (Kissimmee, FL) and freshman catcher Matt Foley (Seekonk, MA) each knocked in a pair of runs as Rhode Island College defeated Curry, 5-3, at D. Forbes Will Field Field on Thursday afternoon.

 

Hubbard went 2-for-4 with a double, while Foley drilled his seventh homer of the season for the Anchormen (8-21). Sophomore left fielder Dean Grasso (Cranston, RI) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, a double and two steals.

 

The visitors took a 1-0 lead in the second inning by loading the bases with one out and Hubbard came through with an RBI single.

 

Rhode Island College increased its advantage to 3-0 in the fifth as Grasso led off with a double and quickly scored on Foley's follow-up blast.

 

In the sixth, sophomore second baseman Tyler Collins (Cranston, RI) singled and stole second, and with two away, senior center fielder Kevin Carey (Wakefield, RI) brought him in with an RBI single.

 

The Colonels (6-16-2) put one across in the bottom of the seventh, but a Hubbard sacrifice fly staked the Anchormen to a 5-1 advantage heading into the final frame.

 

Curry scored twice in its final at-bat before senior pitcher Andrew McKeon (Johnston, RI) came on to pick up the save. Sophomore Stephen Lapatin (Cranston, RI) picked up his first win (1-2), allowing just one run in seven innings of work. He struck out six.

 

Collins also went 2-for-4 with a run scored. 

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference at home against Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, April 20 (noon).
