NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team split a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games at Westminster Saturday, dropping game one 9-5 before grinding out a 7-3 win in 10 innings in game two.

Thiel is now 18-14 overall. The Titans are 12-18.

Thiel struck first in game one- as senior Jarod Nanna (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh) led the second inning off with a single to center field. Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) followed with a one-out single that advanced Nanna to third, and freshman Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) walked on five pitches. With the bases full of Tomcats, sophomore Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) roped a two-run single up the middle to give Thiel a 2-0 lead.

After both sides were held scoreless in the third and fourth innings, Thiel struck again in the fifth, as Trinch led off the inning with a single. Freshman Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) singled up the middle, and senior Doug Farley (Linesville, Pa./Linesville) followed with a two-run single to clear the bases. Farley later scored on a Nanna sacrifice fly to left to extend Thiel's lead to 5-0.

The Titans got a run back in the bottom half of the fifth, utilizing two hits to manufacture a run and trim the Thiel lead to 5-1.

The wheels came off for Thiel in the bottom of the sixth, as the Titans scored eight runs on six hits and took advantage of one Tomcat error to take a commanding 9-5 lead and pull out the win in Game 1.

Trinch went 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Farley was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

The Tomcats answered Westminster's bats in game two with starter Cody Northcott (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton), who threw 120 pitches over nine innings to pick up his sixth win of the season.

The Titans got on the scoreboard first in game two, scoring one run on three hits to take a 1-0 lead after one inning.

Thiel answered in the top of the second, as Nanna took the second pitch of his at-bat deep to left field for his third home run of the season, tying the score at 1-1.

The game remained that score until the bottom of the fifth when a RBI-ground-rule double to right center gave Winster a 2-1 lead.

The Tomcats answered right back in the top of the sixth, scoring a run on a Nanna RBI-single and plating a second on a double play to take a 3-2 advantage after five and a half innings of play.

The Titans again tied the contest in the sixth, as a solo home run knotted the score at 3-3.

The two sides exchanged zeros on the scoreboard until the ninth inning when Westminster loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth. Northcott went to work with his back against the wall, as he fielded a grounder and fired home to get the lead runner, and the first out of the ninth. He then got the next batter to strike out looking on a 3-2 curveball, freezing the Titan batter for his eighth strikeout of the game. He followed by inducing a pop-out to right field, sending the game to the tenth inning.

The Tomcat bats came alive in the tenth, as senior Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) singled to right field to start things off. After a ground out moved him to second, Nanna brought Steininger home with a RBI-single up the middle. Junior Nick Schiavoni (Boiling Spring, Pa./Trinity) followed with a double down the left field line that moved Nanna to third, and Mosley was intentionally walked to load the bases. Trinch didn't disappoint, slapping a two-run single through the middle of the infield to give Thiel a 6-3 lead. A RBI-single by Farley accounted for the seventh and final run.

Parker Meyers (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) came in relief of Northcott, striking out three in his one inning of work for his third save of the season. Northcott picked up the win, throwing nine innings, giving up two earned runs on 10 hits, while walking two.

Nanna went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBIs, while Schiavoni went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Farley, Steininger, and Rossmiller each had two hits in the win.

The Tomcats return to action on Sunday for a nine-inning rubber match with Westminster. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
