Collacchi struck out four, walked two and didn't allow a runner beyond second base, as Salisbury secured its 11th overall CAC title.
"Brett did a great job for us today and when we get to this time of year, you have to pitch and play defense and we did that today," said SU Head Coach Doug Fleetwood, who has now skippered nine CAC championship teams. "Like I just told the guys out there, we're not done. We've got some good teams left on the schedule so we're going to use those games to make sure we're ready for the regional."
The shutout is the second in Collacchi's career, which ranks him second in program history in that category. The Bear, Del., native hurled a one-hitter against Gallaudet University, beating the Bison, 14-0, on March 10 of this year.
Senior Nick Gentry and sophomores Kyle Hayman, Austin Barefoot and Bobby Sanzone each collected two hits in the victory, while senior Evan Graci contributed a two-run double in the first inning to get the offense in gear.
Salisbury (27-6), playing as the visitor, tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and got out of late-inning jams, turning three double plays in the sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.
Root led off the game getting plunked by York starter Dan Gurganus and Gentry singled up the middle, to put runners on first and second with no outs. After a fly out moved Root to third, Gentry picked up his 20th stolen base of the season in as many attempts. Graci then lined a 2-0 pitch to right-center field for the lead.
The Sea Gulls added to the lead in the fourth with a sacrifice fly by Ken O'Neill. Hayman found the left-center field gap for a double with one out, prior to a Barefoot single through the left side pushed Hayman to third. Gurganus hit Sanzone to load the bases and O'Neill followed with a fly ball to left to extend the lead to 3-0.
Collacchi got through the bottom of the inning in nine pitches, and after a Gentry single to end a nine-pitch at-bat to begin the fifth, Tyler Alexander relieved Gurganus. Alexander recorded two outs, but hit Schiotis for the first of two times in the game, putting runners of first and second for Hayman. The right fielder lined a single to left to plate Graci for the 4-0 lead.
Schiotis moved into fourth place in SU history in hit-by-pitches with 28.
Gurganus took the loss on the mound for the Spartans, falling to 2-6 in four-plus innings of work. He also allowed six hits, one walk and all four runs while fanning three. Nic Long finished 2-for-3 for York (18-17).
Salisbury travels to Washington (Md.) College on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
