UR's Late Rally Just Short vs. Brockport

More news about: Rochester

ROCHESTER, NY-The University of Rochester rallied late, but couldn't come all the way back in a 6-4 defeat at the hands of the College at Brockport on Tuesday.

The Yellowjackets (15-16) were down 6-0 entering their half of the eighth inning and tallied a run and then three more in the ninth to make Brockport sweat, but the Golden Eagles (18-13) would hang on for the non-conference victory.

Brockport's Travis Renwick picked up the win (5-2) after five strong innings where he allowed just three hits and struck out three.  Matt Todd (1-3) picked up the loss for Rochester.

The Golden Eagles would get off to a quick start, scoring four runs over the first three innings.  In the first, Zach Lander doubled in a run and then promptly scored on a UR fielding error.

In the 2nd, Kyle Tracy grounded out scoring a run with Mike Weakley singling up the middle to score a run in the third.  After three Brockport led 4-0.

The Yellowjacket pitching would then hold strong until the eighth inning when Brockport's Nick Bunce would crack a 2-run homer to left centerfield, building the Golden Eagle lead to 6-0.

In the bottom of the eight, a leadoff strikeout was followed by four straight singles, with the last coming by Chris Davis to score Josh Ludwig. With the bases loaded, Brockport pitcher Justin McCarthy got another strikeout and was assisted by a great diving play from 2nd baseman Wesley Burghardt for the final out of the inning.

That play proved to be big for Brockport as UR would rally again in the ninth.  With one out and a runner on, Ethan Sander was hit by a pitch which was followed by a Ludwig single.  With the bases loaded, Nick Carlson would line a double to left center, scoring all three runners, cutting the lead to 6-4.

Brockport then went to the bullpen for reliever Mark Driesel and he quickly retired Nolan Schultz and Davis to end the game and pick up his first save of the year.

Bunce finished 2-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs for Brockport while his teammate Burghardt was 3-4 reaching base four times.  Carlson finished 2-4 with 3 RBI for UR with Ludwig chipping in two hits and two runs scored to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

UR next travels to St. Lawrence for a big conference showdown in the Liberty League while Brockport's next game is a home contest against St. John Fisher on Wednesday.
