10-Run Fourth Helps #6 Cortland Defeat Cazenovia, 15-1

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Brian Barry (Nesconset/Smithtown East) and junior Anthony Iacomini (South Salem/John Jay-Cross River) each finished 3-for-3 with two RBI as part of a 16-hit attack as nationally sixth-ranked Cortland defeated Cazenovia College, 15-1. Cortland improved to 28-8 with its 10th straight win.

Barry reached base four times on three singles and a walk scored three times and Iacomini finished with three singles and two runs scored. Senior Bryan Mistretta (Commack) was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored, junior Max Rosing (Rockville Centre/South Side) and sophomore Mitch Hollander (Woodbury/Syosset) each finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, and sophomore Donny Castaldo (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Sophomore Brandon McClain (Coram/Longwood) allowed five hits and one run and struck out seven in five innings to run his record to 4-0 on the spring. Senior John Molloy (Franklin Square/Carey) retired all six batters he faced, three by strikeout. Sophomore Ryan McAlary (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) struck out one in a perfect eighth inning and freshman Travis Laitar (Fergus, ON/Centre Wellington) gave up a hit and a walk in a scoreless ninth.

Joe Rogers went 2-for-3 and Matt Sheridan finished 1-for-3 with an RBI for Cazenovia (10-22). Tim Ackerman was 1-for-3 with a run scored and, as the Wildcats' starting pitcher, allowed 11 runs, five earned, in three and a third innings. He gave up 10 hits and a walk a struck out one.

Cortland broke the game open by 14 batters to the plate in a 10-run fourth inning that extended a 4-1 lead to 14-1. The Red Dragons recorded six hits, two walks and two hit batters during the inning.

The Red Dragons took a 1-0 lead on Chris Jackson's (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first. Cazenovia tied the game on Sheridan's RBI single in the second. The Wildcats had runners on first and second with one out before a double play ended the inning.

Cortland scored twice in the second on RBI singles by Mistretta and Barry and once in the third on a Iacomini RBI bunt single. The 10-run fourth was highlighted by RBI singles by Iacomini, Hollander and Castaldo, a Barry bases-loaded walk and a Jackson RBI double. The Red Dragons' final run came in the sixth on a Conrad Ziemendorf (Penfield/Webster Schroeder) leadoff triple and Castaldo RBI infield single.

Cortland will conclude its SUNYAC regular-season schedule with a three-game weekend series at Fredonia. The teams will play one game Friday at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
