After an 18-day layoff courtesy of Mother Nature, St. Thomas finally got back on the baseball field Thursday and swept MIAC rival St. John's 16-3 and 10-1 to run its winning streak to 10 games and remain atop the conference.

The No. 4-ranked Tommies (18-4 overall, 6-0 MIAC) -- playign its first road games of the season -- squared off against the Johnnies on their new artificial turf field, which was ringed with several inches of snow. But the long gap since an April 7 doubleheader sweep of St. Mary's had little effect on the St. Thomas bats as the Tommies had nearly as many extra-base hits (13) on the day as singles (14).

In the first game, six players had singles, six had doubles and three had home runs in a 15-hit attack. The Tommies exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning and six in the fifth to stake junior pitcher Steve Maher (2-1) to a 16-2 lead.

Leading 3-2 going into the fourth, St. Thomas strung together five hits in a row, including three doubles and a two-run homerun by catcher J.D. Dorgan. The Tommies repeated the feat in the fifth with five straight hits, capped by designated hitter Dylan Thomas' three-run blast to deep left. Tyler Peterson had the Tommies' third homer, a solo shot in the first.

In the second game, St. Thomas jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Tim Kuzniar's two-run home run and added four runs in the third in building a 9-0 lead. Thomas took the mound and struck out nine over six innings to improve to 5-1 on the season.

For the doubleheader, Dorgan and Kuzniar each had five hits. Petersen led the Tommies with six RBI and three players -– Dorgan, Kinsel and Kuzniar -– had four apiece.

Josh Groth went 2-for-3 with two walks on the day for St. John's.

St. Thomas returns to MIAC action with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Macalester on Koch Diamond. The games were moved to St. Thomas from Macalester, so the Scots will be the home team.
