Providence, R.I.-Freshman pitcher Brody Loughlin (Rockland, MA) hurled a complete game to earn his first collegiate win (1-2) as Babson defeated Rhode Island College, 7-3, at Anchorman Field on Thursday afternoon.

The Beavers (21-14) scored twice in the top of the first, loading the bases with two down. Sophomore right fielder Sean MacPhee (Framingham, MA) drew a walk to plate the first run and junior catcher Brendan Collins (Abington, MA) brought in another with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Babson tacked on three more runs in the top off the third as senior first baseman Conor Kortmann (Manalapan, NJ) led off with a single and moved up into scoring position on a wild pitch. MacPhee ripped an RBI double down the left field line to make it 3-0. With runners on first and second, senior shortstop Pat Matvichuk (Middleton, MA) singled to bring in one runner and an error allowed a second run to trot home as the Beavers increased their advantage to 5-0.

In the seventh, the visitors put runners on first and second as senior second baseman John Botelho (Tempe, AZ) and Matvichuk registered back-to-back singles with one down. An Anchorman error allowed Botelho to score before sophomore reliever Dylan Cummiskey (Warwick, RI) worked his way out of the frame with a pickoff and a ground out.

Senior third baseman Chris Kucher (Westwood, MA) homered (8) to lead off the ninth to cap the Beavers' offensive output.

The Anchormen finally got to Loughlin in the bottom of the ninth as Foley reached on an error and freshman third baseman Justin Costa (Cranston, RI) doubled to put runners on second and third. With one down, junior designated hitter Alex Verrecchia (Cranston, RI) came through with a two-run single to right field. With two away, senior right fielder Kyle Mann (West Warwick, RI) brought in Verrecchia before Loughlin induced a pop out to secure the win.

RIC (9-24) sophomore Stephen Lapatin (Cranston, RI) took the loss (1-3), allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits. He struck out three and walked two in six innings of work. Senior center fielder Kevin Carey (Wakefield, RI) went 3-for-4. Verrecchia went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.

Loughlin allowed three runs, only one of which was earned, on nine hits and struck out eight.

Kucher finished the day going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI to go along with his home run. Matvichuk and Kortmann also picked up two hits, while Botelho scored two runs.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference action at Western Connecticut on Saturday, April 27 (noon).
