The Benedictine University baseball team slugged 38 hits on the way to 27 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Lakeland on Saturday. The first contest lasted just seven innings as Benedictine scored seven runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to break open a close contest in a 13-2 win. Mike Irgang was the beneficiary of the run support, improving to 4-0 on the season with a complete game. Irgang struck out six in the victory. The seven-run sixth featured three two-run doubles as Tim Hendricks, Mike Luschen, and Steve Cocat all logged two-baggers. Nick Karakosta also drove home a run with a single. Karakosta finished with four hits in the win with Luschen, Cocat, and Kevin Hendricks logging three each. Luschen recorded four RBIs as well. Game two went the distance as Pat Cashman made a solid return. Cashman, who missed a start last week, struck out nine in seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits. Nick Diessner and Nick Mishevich each threw an inning. Already leading 8-0, Benedictine put the game out of reach with a six-run ninth to blank Lakeland 14-0. The Muskies tallied just five total hits. Brandon Clark homered in the inning. Tom Byrne picked up a two-run double and Luschen an RBI single before Clark plated two more with an RBI single. Tim Hendricks and Justin Kovalsky posted three hits each in the game. Seven individuals slammed more than one hit in the game and Cervantes also hit a homer in the contest. Some streaks continued while others came to an end on Saturday. Cervantes was held without a hit in the opener, snapping a 20-game streak. Karakosta was hitless in game two, also stopping a 20-game streak. Karakosta still found a way to reach with a walk in the second contest and has been on base in all 33 games this season. Ryan Mullin has now reached in 21 straight. Benedictine (26-7, 14-4) has won six in a row to match a season high streak and owns victories in 12 of the last 13 games. The Eagles will host Wisconsin Lutheran on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
