Pointers pummel Yellowjackets

Yogi Berra was a hall of fame ball player for the great New York Yankee teams of the 1950s and 1960s. But as great of a player as Berra was, he may be an even better philosopher. One of his greatest sayings is, "It's like deja vu all over again."

And those seven words fit the Yellowjacket baseball team perfectly.

Last Saturday was a tough one for them, as they were thoroughly beaten in a doubleheader at UW-Oshkosh, only to come back on Sunday and sweep the final two games of the series. Saturday at Stevens Point, the Yellowjackets were on the business end of another rough day, as the Pointers took the first two games of the weekend series in convincing fashion.

The first game saw the Yellowjackets get shut out for just the second time on the season, as Pointer pitcher J.P. Feyereisen shut them down, pitching seven scoreless innings before the bullpen closed out the game. The Yellowjackets mustered just five hits in the game, led by Robbie Veith (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) who had two of them, going 2-for-4.

After a scoreless first inning the Pointers took advantage of a pair of Yellowjacket errors to open the scoring in the second. Nick Douglas drove in two runs with a double and Clint Rose did the same with a single, and by the time Yellowjacket starter Dan Genrich (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) closed out the inning the Pointers were up 5-0.

Two more errors led to a Pointer run in the fourth. Casey Barnes and Bobby Gregorich added RBI singles in the top of the seventh to make it 8-0. The Pointers added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to hit double digits and make the final score 10-0.

Genrich went seven innings on the mound for the Yellowjackets, giving up eight runs (six earned) on 11 hits with two walks and three strikeouts. With the loss Genrich dropped to 5-5 on the year. Riley Grandson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) pitched the final two innings.

Dan Douglas had three hits, while Nick Douglas and Riley Spetz each had two to pace the Pointer attack.

Things didn't get any better for the Yellowjackets in the second game, as the Pointers scored in each of the first four innings to pull away early.

After the first two hitters of the game reached base, Sean Gerber doubled to score them both and Stevens Point was off and running and jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The Yellowjackets had an answer in the bottom of the inning, as TJ Evanson (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) pulled a ball over the left field fence that also scored Veith to make it 3-2 after the first inning.

That was as close as the Yellowjackets would get.

Yellowjacket starter Cody Johnson (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) walked the first two hitters of the second inning, and two batters later Gerber picked up his second, two-RBI double in as many innings to make it 5-2. An RBI single later, Johnson was out of the game in favor of Graham Miller (Cumberland, Wis./Cumberland), but he didn't fare much better, as the Pointers tacked on three more runs to lead 9-2.

Jake Lewis (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) came on to pitch the third inning but the Pointers got to him as well, putting up six more runs to make it a 15-2 game. The big blow in the third was a Nick Rouglas two-run single.

The Yellowjackets added a run in the bottom of the third inning when Tony Remund (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 15-3. Stevens Point got that run back, however, in the top of the fourth.

Stevens Point added their final runs in the top of the of the sixth, scoring five times to make it 21-3. Brandon Kranz had the big hit in the inning, a two-run single. The Yellowjackets committed a pair of errors in the inning, helping the Pointers put up the five runs.

The Yellowjackets scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh when Veith and Wyatt Soderquist (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) led off the inning with back-to-back doubles to make the final score 21-4.

Veith had another good game at the plate, going 3-for-4 and scoring a pair of runs. Soderquist had a two-hit game as the Yellowjackets knocked out ten in the game.

Johnson was hit with the loss, falling to 2-3 on the year. He gave up six runs on six hits in an inning-and-a-third. Miller pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing three runs on three hits. Lewis allowed 10 runs (eight earned) on ten hits in three-and-two-thirds innings. Aaron Martin (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) and Brandon Jeffery (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) closed out the game on the mound.

Stevens Point pounded out 22 hits in the game, led by Ryan Schilter, Gerber and Spetz who had four hits apiece. Schilter scored five runs and Gerber drove in five to lead the Pointers.

The Yellowjackets (14-19, 7-11 WIAC) and the Pointers will play the third and fourth games of their weekend series on Sunday, April 28. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
