NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Mike Smith went 2-for-3 with two runs and Chris Jimenez went 1-for-3 with one RBI but the potent offense of the United States Merchant Marine Academy posted 22 runs on 23 hits in a 22-5 win on Sunday afternoon at Father John Blanco Field at Salesian High School.

Andrew Mulvey (2-7) was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs – six earned – in 4.0 innings while southpaw Ben Tracy (1-0) earned his first victory of the season after going 6.0 innings, allowing five runs – three earned.

Tough luck for Mulvey to start the inning as the Mariners plated two baserunners on close plays to take a 2-0 lead.

CCNY struck back and tied the contest at 2-2 as Olivo doubled down the left field line and advanced to third base on a single thru the right side by Smith. After Angel Zapata was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Nwokelo was walked to plate Olivo from third base and score CCNY's first run of the game.

A failed pickoff attempt to second base just got away from the second baseman and allowed Smith to score from third and tie the game at two.

However, small ball factored into the afternoon matchup as a two-out squeeze play by Tyler Alger was successful as the runner from third scored, giving USMMA a 3-2 lead. A bad hop at first base allowed the Mariners to add another runner but a great scoop by Kennedy Tavarez at first base ended the inning.

USMMA added a run in the third before CCNY struck with two runs on patient hitting at the plate as a hit by pitch, walk and fielder's choice along with two errors made it a one-run game.

A costly error allowed three runs to score in the top of the fourth as USMMA now led 8-4 but a huge fifth inning blew the game open as the Mariners added six runs to take a 14-4 lead. Continuing the trend, USMMA added three runs in the sixth and now led 17-4.

CCNY scored one run after Victor Vargas walked and came around to score on a double by Chris Jimenez. USMMA scored five runs in the top of the seventh to take a 22-5 lead.
