GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Al Posch finished 3-for-4 with three runs and stretched his hitting streak to 25 games as the Gettysburg College baseball team broke the program record for wins in a season, topping Messiah College 12-4 Wednesday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.

Playing its regular-season finale, the Bullets (29-11) captured their 29th victory of the year and won for the 14th time in their last 15 games. The 1988 team, which finished 28-10 and played in the NCAA Division III Tournament, held the previous school record for single-season wins.

Sophomore Kyle Beldoch threw 6 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win for Gettysburg, allowing just five hits, one walk, and one unearned run.

Messiah closed out the season with a record for 15-23.

The Bullets were playing the Falcons for the first time since 2001 and earned their first win over Messiah since 1993. Gettysburg broke open a close game with eight runs over the fourth and fifth innings to assume a 12-3 lead.

Sophomore Scott Zanghellini went 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Orange and Blue while junior Nate Simon was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Senior Pat Cody finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs while junior Austin Davis added a pair of runs.

Davis led off the game with a double into left as Gettysburg jumped on starter Peter Fisher with three runs on three hits and an error in the first. The Bullets added an unearned run in the second, as Simon's deep sacrifice fly to center made it 4-0.

Senior starter John Donovan blanked the Falcons over the first two innings before running into trouble in the third. Messiah reached Donovan with two hits and three walks, scoring two runs and loading the bases with one out. Beldoch (2-1) was then called out of the bullpen, and he promptly induced a dribbler back to the mound, which he underhanded to the plate for the second out. After walking in a run, he got out of the jam with a pop-up to himself.

The Bullets pushed across four unearned runs in the fourth against reliever Tyler Moody. Zanghellini drove in a pair with a double down the leftfield line before O'Grady capped the inning with a scalding triple into the left-center gap to make it 8-3.

Gettysburg broke it open with its four-run fifth. The Bullets loaded the bases with one out following four walks and a caught stealing against submariner Colby Helgerson. Simon, junior Mike Elisio, Zanghellini, and O'Grady would then all drive in a run against reliever Mitch McClure.

In the meantime, Beldoch was in command, blanking the Falcons from the fourth through the sixth when he retired eight of the 10 batters he faced. In the sixth, Simon provided an outstanding defensive play at third, laying out for a diving stop on a hard-hit ball to his left. He then fired a strong throw to senior Brett Norton at second, who made the relay to first for an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play.

Messiah scored its only run against Beldoch in the seventh, when Joseph Saufly doubled before crossing the plate on an error. Beldoch allowed another double in the ninth but recorded the final two outs, catching a Falcon looking to end the game.

Gettysburg plays its first-ever home conference playoff game on Friday, when the second-seeded Bullets take on third-seeded Haverford College at 3 p.m. in the first round of the Centennial Conference Tournament.
