ALMA, Mich. – Albion College had the tying runs on base in the seventh inning of both games Wednesday, but the rallies fell short in 8-7 losses to Alma College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association baseball doubleheader at Klenk Park.

A pair of 3-run homeruns – a first-inning shot by Cameron Schmidt in game one and a second-inning blast over the left field foul pole by Jose Rosado in game two – boosted Alma to early leads.

Albion plated a pair of seventh-inning runs in game one as B.J. Konkle delivered a two-out single to left field to plate pinch-runner Lee Madziar and Michael Fischbach. Konkle was stranded at first as Tony Cappelletty struck out to end the game.

Fischbach's two-out single in the seventh inning of game two drove in Davin Montgomery. Madziar was at third base representing the tying run and Fischbach represented the go-ahead run, but Konkle flied out to center to end the game.

Leadoff hitter Brendan Diamond finished the day 4-for-7 with three runs scored and a RBI. He also stole four bases to bring his single-season school record total to 32. Fischbach and Konkle finished the day with three hits apiece.

Alex Kravat, Rosado and Schmidt collected three hits apiece for Alma.

The teams will complete the four-game series at 2 p.m. Friday with a doubleheader at Albion's Frank Joranko Field.
