Providence, R.I.-Sophomore starting pitcher Mike Gibbons' (Simsbury, CT) allowed just one run on five hits, to go along with five strikeouts, in six innings of work to lead Wheaton past Rhode Island College, 13-3, in collegiate baseball played at Anchorman Field on Thursday afternoon.

Wheaton (29-10) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as freshman designated hitter Matt Lavanchy (Walpole, MA) led off with a double down the right field line. After being sacrificed to third, senior shortstop Eric Jensen (Gorham, NH) smacked an RBI double to left field to plate Lavanchy.

The Lyons got right back to work in the top of the second, tagging the Anchormen for six runs. With one out and runners on second and third, senior second baseman Justin Connor (Arlington, MA) laid down a perfect RBI bunt single. Lavanchy followed with an RBI double to right field and freshman third baseman Mike Beneduce (North Kingstown, RI) brought in a pair with a double of his own. Sophomore first baseman Apolinar De la Cruz (Providence, RI) knocked in one with an RBI ground out and senior right fielder Paul O'Neill (Framingham, MA) capped the scoring with an RBI infield single.

The visitors tacked on another run to make it 8-0 in the third. With one down, freshman center fielder Matt Knight (Fremont, CA) and Connor each singled. An Anchorman error on what would have been the third out allowed Knight to trot home.

The Anchormen (11-26) broke up Gibbons' no-hitter in the fourth as senior shortstop Zach Hubbard (Kissimmee, FL) singled and advanced to third on senior center fielder Kevin Carey's (Wakefield, RI) double to left center field. With one down, junior left fielder Alex Verrecchia (Cranston, RI) plated Hubbard with an RBI single to center field.

A three-run eighth helped put the game out of reach for WC as the Lyons loaded the bases with no outs. Sophomore pinch hitter Kevin Foley (Southbury, CT) singled in a run, freshman pinch hitter Jimmy Smith (Worcester, MA) scored on a wild pitch and Knight knocked in another with an RBI single.

Gibbons earned his fifth win (5-1) before giving way to the relief corps in the seventh. Knight went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Jensen went 4-for-6 with a run scored, two RBI and a double.
