Rossmiller's two-run home run in the tenth powers Thiel past Bearcats

LATROBE, Pa. – A two-run home run by Nick Rossmiller (Butler, Pa./Butler) in the top of the 10th powered the Tomcat baseball team past Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Saint Vincent College 6-4 in ten innings Friday afternoon.

Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) picked up his fifth win of the season (5-2) in relief of starter Nick Rossmiller (Butler, Pa./Butler) and senior Cody Northcott (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) earned his first save of the season after entering in the bottom of the 10th.

Rossmiller went seven innings and took a no decision, allowing four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Freshman Riley Schwertz (Zelienople, Pa./Freedom) replaced Rossmiller in the eighth and gave up just one hit in two-third innings, and Elko surrendered no hits and struck out one in his 1.1 inning. Northcott took the ball in the tenth and allowed just one hit and struck out one, posting a scoreless frame to close out the Bearcats.

Jarod Nanna (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh) hit his fourth home run in the past seven games when he connected for a two-run blast in the top of the third. Nanna was 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs and a run scored. Senior Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) led the Tomcats with two runs scored and was 2-for-5 at the plate. Nick Rossmiller (Butler, Pa./Butler), entering the game at third in the top of the eighth, hit a go-ahead two-run home run, his fourth of the season, in his lone plate appearance of the contest in the tenth inning, while Doug Farley (Linesville, Pa./Linesville), Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) and Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) each collected a base hit.

Thiel took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the third, as Koller led the inning off with a double to center field. Doug Farley (Linesville, Pa./Linesville) followed with a seeing-eye single to left center before a sacrifice fly by King scored the opening run. Nanna's two-run homer capped the scoring and put the guests ahead.

Thiel plated another run in the top of the fifth, when Nanna hit a single to center field that scored Steininger from second to put the Tomcats up 4-0. It is Nanna's 41st RBI of the season, the second-most in the PAC.

Saint Vincent rallied to tie the game with four runs in the bottom of the seventh as the Bearcats manufactured their runs on a walk and five hits.

In the top of the 10th, Rossmiller hit a towering, two-run homer to provide the game-winning runs.


Joey Fearer took the loss for the Bearcats, throwing nine innings. He allowed seven hits and five runs (four earned) with six strikeouts and three walks. Eamon Kelly worked the tenth, responsible for one run on the homer by Rossmiller.

The two teams wrap up the regular season when the Tomcats host the Bearcats at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader at Tomcat Park with PAC playoff seeding on the line. The day will also serve as Senior Day for the nine Tomcat seniors.
