Giants Breeze Past Cyclones in First Game of CSAC Championships

Boyertown, PA – Keystone College jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of the first game of Friday's Colonial States Athletic Conference Baseball Championships and never looked back on their way to a 15-3 victory over Centenary College at Bear Stadium in Boyertown, PA.  The topped-seeded Giants, who are currently ranked 12th in the country, notched their 12th straight victory to improve to 31-7 on the season and will play the winner of Friday's second game between Neumann University and Gwynedd-Mercy College on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
 
Keystone jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after batting around. The Giants loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first inning on three walks and Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) hit a sacrifice fly to deep right field to bring home Kevin Catherina (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Mary (Rutherford)) with the game's first run.  Rick McLaughlin (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) then delivered a single to right field to score Tyler Gurman (Bronx, NY/Lehman) from third and Ricky Riscica (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) followed with a double to center to plate Gabriel Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Perkiomen School) and McLaughlin.  The Giants pushed their lead to 5-0 when Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) singled to left to drive in Riscica.
 
Centenary (17-20-1) got a run back in the top of the second inning as Kevin Litus hit a one-out double to right-center before coming around to score on a single just out of the Giants' shortstop's reach by Mike Crowe.  The Cyclones loaded the bases with two outs in the frame, but Keystone starting Mike Pembleton (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Township) induced an inning-ending groundout to get out of the jam. 
 
Keystone restored their five-run advantage in the home third when Riscica delivered an RBI base hit to center to plate McLaughlin before Guerrero blasted a two-run home run, his seventh of the season, over the left field fence to push the Giants' lead to 8-1.  
 
With runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Miquel Castano (Miami, FL/Miami Springs) lined a single to left field to score Molina and Riscica before Austin Straub (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) followed with a base knock to plate Castano to make the score 11-1 in favor of Keystone.
 
Centenary loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth inning and Ian Steepy delivered a single to score Crowe from third, cutting the Giants lead to 11-2.
 
Ramirez led off the Keystone sixth with a double down the left field line and advanced to a third on a groundout by Molina and scored on a two-out single off the bat of Guerrero.  Castano then followed with a single up the middle that scored Riscica to push the Giants' advantage to 13-2. 
 
Pinch hitter Jhonattan Santelises (Lynn, MA/Lynn English ) blasted a solo home run deep over the wall in left-center in the bottom of the eighth inning and Gaston Rojas (Carmel, NY/Carmel) hit an RBI single to drive in Jose Garcia (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central), stretching Keystone's advantage to 15-2 heading in to the final inning.
 
Sean Cody led off the visitor's ninth with a single to left and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Trevor Crowe to close out the scoring.
 
Pembleton improve to 6-0 on the mound after going 5.2 innings and allowing two runs on six hits four walks while striking out a pair of batters.  Robert Minaya (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) allowed just one hit in 2.1 innings of work while fanning two while Chad Force (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) worked the final inning on the mound to close out the victory. 
 
Guerrero knocked in four runs on three hits, Riscica finished the day 3-3 at the plate with three RBIs and four runs scored, and Castano drove in three runs on three hits to lead the Giants.
 
Centenary starter Jimmy Kraivec fell to 3-2 on the spring, suffering the loss after eight runs on five hits and four walks in 2.2 innings of work.  The Cyclones used a total of five pitchers on the afternoon.
 
Crowe finished the afternoon 2-4 at the plate with a pair of RBIs and a run scored to lead Centenary's offense.
 
The Cyclones will face off against the loser of Friday's game between Neumann and Gwynedd-Mercy in an elimination game on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
