QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – The Manhattanville baseball team lost to the DeSales Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon by the score of 5-1 as the Valiant offense was held to just five hits by Bulldog pitching. With the loss Manhattanville will play in an elimination game later this evening at 7 p.m. at Quakertown Memorial Stadium.

Sophomore Michael Lyon (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) went to the hill, as he faced the Bulldogs for the second time in 2013, losing the first game 6-2 a few weeks ago in Center Valley, Pa.

Lyon yielded one run on a pop fly to second base that was dropped and turned into a fielder's choice allowing the first DeSales run to score.

Bobby Guerra (Bronx, N.Y./Arlington) was the Valiants' first base runner of the afternoon as he was hit by a pitch, and then moved up to second on a passed ball. Manhattanville's offense was unable to do anything with the runner in scoring position as the score remained 1-0.

Lyon and DeSales starter Colby Pacillo went inning-for-inning without much offense until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Bulldogs added three runs to their lead with the big blow coming from Freedom Conference batting leader Brian Mauro doubling to score a pair.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs got a one out single to bring up Mauro again. The left-handed batter then extended his swing and poked a ball that was in the right-handed batter's box into left field as the lead runner moved up to third on the single. A sacrifice fly brought home another run and cap off the DeSales scoring at five runs.

Sophomore Zack Zareva (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) pitched an inning of relief in the bottom half of the eighth inning and hung up a zero to send the game to the ninth inning with the Valiants down by five runs.

Senior Sean Ferguson (Astoria, N.Y./Xavier) got the inning started with a one out double to the left centerfield fence followed by a Guerra single to send Ferguson to third. Sophomore Kevin Brady (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) sent a sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring home Manhattanville's first run. Senior John Bucci (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) singled, but Pacillo ended the game with a strikeout to send Manhattanville to Saturday night's game against Misericordia.

Taking the loss was Lyon (4-6), after allowing four earned runs on 10 hits while striking out seven Bulldogs. Zareva allowed a hit in his lone inning of work. Picking up the complete game victory was Pacillo (3-1) as he allowed just one run on five hits and a pair of walks while striking out three Valiant batters.

Manhattanville (14-28) falls to the elimination game later today against Misericordia, who defeated the FDU-Florham Devils earlier in the day to advance to tonight's contest, which begins at 7 p.m. Live stats of the game will be available at http://www.sidearmstats.com/misericordia/baseball/xlive.htm
