Warhawks Use Total Team Effort to Roll Falcons

Fifteen runs on sixteen hits was the winning formula for UW-Whitewater in a 15-2 win over Concordia University of Wisconsin Tuesday at Prucha Field at Miller Stadium in Whitewater.  The Warhawks improve their overall record to 31-5 while the Falcons fall to 15-25.

Concordia scored first to take a 1-0 lead, but their line score read zeros until the ninth, when down by fourteen, they scored one more.  The Falcons' first tally came on an RBI single by leftfielder Joel Sharon in the top of the first.  Their second, and last run, was scored on a ground out to third in the ninth.

The 1-0 Falcon lead didn't last long as the Warhawks scored five in the bottom half of the first and never looked back.  The inning started with Michael Gonzalez (Delavan/Delavan-Darien) getting hit by a pitch.  Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington) followed with a walk and Jared Fon (Germantown/Germantown) singled down the left field line to load the bases.  In the next at bat Marty Herum (River Falls/River Falls) hit a sacrifice fly to left to score the first run for UW-W.  Two batters later, again with the bases loaded, David Cladis (Joliet, IL/Joliet Catholic) walked to plate another run.  A sacrifice fly by Steve Bartlein (South Milwaukee/South Milwaukee) made it 3-1 in favor of UW-W and a double steal of second and home made it 4-1.  Casey Power (Ontario, Canada/Belle River), the eighth UW-W batter in the inning, singled in the fifth and final run of the frame.

With a four run lead Brock Liston (Darien, IL/Joliet Catholic) returned to the mound for UW-W and remained in the game until the fifth, giving up just one hit after the first inning.  Liston went on to earn the win and improve to 2-0 this season.

The runs may have stopped for the Falcons, but not for the Warhawks.  The Warhawks scored three in the second, two in the third, two in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two in the seventh.  Eleven different Warhawks collected a hit in the game and 21 different players saw action.  Five Warhawks: Friend, Herum, Pierce, Bartlein and JT Schneider (Oak Creek/Oak Creek), collected multiple hits.  Pierce has now reached base safely in thirty consecutive games.

The Warhawks were also successful on ten out of ten stolen base attempts.  UW-W's ten stolen bases is one shy of the school record for stolen bases in a single game set back on March 26, 1984 against California Tech.

Justin Mortensen (Hartland/Arrowhead) pitched the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings for the Warhawks and gave up just one hit while striking out three.  Mike Mierow (Brookfield/Central) pitched the ninth and gave up one hit and one run while striking out one.

UW-W will wrap up regular season play on Wednesday when they host a doubleheader with conference foe UW-Platteville beginning at 1 pm.  The Warhawks, the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season champion, will host the WIAC tournament on Saturday and Sunday, May 11 and 12.
