Bulldogs Move into Championship with 11-6 Win over Hope

HOLLAND, Mich. - The Adrian College baseball team moved into the championship of the 2013 MIAA Tournament improving to 2-0 with an 11-6 win over Hope College on Thursday morning. Adrian pounded out 15 hits and scored in the final five innings to move within one win of the title and berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Hope took a 4-0 lead with four runs in the top of the fourth. Luke Brower had the big hit which was a bases-loaded double with two outs to stake the Flying Dutchmen to the early lead. Adrian came back with a vengeance scoring 11 straight runs between the fourth and eighth innings. Hope added two runs in the ninth to get a bit closer but left the bases loaded.

Garrett Green went 3-for-5 with two runs and tied his career-high with three hits. He started 3-for-3 before striking out his last two at-bats. Mitch Stefanski entered the game to replace Zach Kolvey as designated hitter and launched his fourth home run of the season over the right field wall to lead off the bottom of the seventh.

Adrian took the lead for the first time in the sixth with three runs. Anthony Sergi had a RBI single which was the last batter for Hope starter Currey Thomas. Jake Chipka came in and gave up a RBI single to Sam Fischer. Ben Yax also scored on a wild pitch for the first run of the inning.

Holden Branch had a rough fourth inning but settled down shutout the Flying Dutchmen over the final three innings. He went seven and allowed five hits and improved to 7-1. Jeff Davis threw a perfect eighth and got into a jam in the ninth. He walked home a run and also hit a batter with the bases loaded. Cory Fox came in and got the final out off the bat of T.J. Klein which was a groundout to first unassisted.

The top five batters in the order all had one RBI for the Bulldogs as Sackett collected two hits after getting three hits yesterday in four at-bats against Trine. Adrian will play on Friday at noon against Trine at Boeve Stadium.
