Union, N.J. (5/10/13) – The Kean University baseball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep of Farmingdale State College in the regular season finale by the finals of 2-0 and 18-3 Friday afternoon at Jim Hynes Stadium.
The #9/11 Cougars finish the regular season with a 34-10 overall record and will now await the NCAA Tournament announcement on late Sunday evening or early Monday morning. Kean is currently ranked #1 in the recent Mid-Atlantic regional ranking.
Game One
In the opener, senior Kevin Herget breezed to a complete game shutout as he allowed just six singles and no walks with five strikeouts to improve to 8-2 this season. Herget now has 29 career wins with the Cougars setting a new standard in that category. Herget passes former Cougar Dan Zeffiro who had 28.
Kean plated two runs in the third frame as senior Nick Ramagli drove in two with a one-out single up the middle.
Junior Tyler Smarslok finished the first contest with a 2-for-2 performance with a run scored and stolen base. For the Rams (28-13) junior Daniel Paccione collected two of their six singles.
Game Two
The Cougars pounded out 18 runs and 19 hits in the nightcap as both teams combined to use 44 players in the matchup.
Kean jumped on the board with a six spot in the first inning and breezed to the doubleheader sweep. In their first at-bat, sophomore Andy Lopez recorded an RBI single while junior Joe O'Connor tallied an RBI on a groundball error. Rookie Ryan Kelley registered one of his four hits in game two and picked up an RBI as Kean led 6-0 after one.
Farmingdale scratched across single runs in the third and fourth, but Kean held a controlling 8-2 lead and pushed that advantage even further with five multiple run innings in total.
Sophomore Charles Thielmann (8-2) earned the win with a five inning effort. He allowed two runs and six hits with two strikeouts. Senior Anthony Eilers suffered the loss. Eilers only recorded one out and allowed three runs and two hits.
Offensively Kelley was 4-for-5 with two RBI and a double. O'Connor finished game two 2-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored, including a double and triple. Freshman Salvatore Taormina added three hits and two RBI while junior Scott Kinney was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a triple.
