Staten Island wins CUNYAC with gem

The Baruch College Bearcats lost 1-0 to Staten Island in Game Seven of the CUNYAC/MCU Baseball Championship Tournament played on Friday night at MCU Park in Coney Island.

The Bearcats finish in second place with a season record of 20-18, while the Dolphins from the College of Staten Island win the championship with an overall record of 30-12.

The two teams played their hearts out today for the coveted CUNYAC trophy. Starting next year, teams will play for the trophy and automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament that will be available to the conference champion.

The Bearcats started the afternoon by defeating Staten Island in game six, 6-5, in 11 innings.
Jasdeep Buttarhit a two out pop up in the 11th inning that was dropped by an infielder to enable Richard Valerioto score the go ahead and eventual winning run.

Andrew Lizardiearned his fourth victory of the season with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to enable the Bearcats to record at least 20 wins for the second straight season.

That 6-5 victory forced a game seven to decide the championship.

The Dolphins won 1-0 to win the championship for the 15th team in their team history. The Bearcats had six total hits but could not muster enough offense with runners on base to suffer the disappointing loss.

Paul Perezis the tough luck loser despite pitching an outstanding complete game with a line of eight innings, one earned run, two walks and five strikeouts.
