Harwich, MA --- Southern Maine senior Logan Carman (Newfields, NH) fired a three-hit shutout with five strikeouts to help lead top-seeded Southern Maine to a 5-0 triumph over #8 Daniel Webster in the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament this afternoon.

The Huskies (38-7) will play fourth-seeded Western New England in the winners bracket game tomorrow at 4:30 PM while the Eagles (28-11) try to stay in alive in the Harwich regional against #5 MIT at 9:30 AM.

The contest started off as an old fashioned pitchers duel between Carman and senior Greg Dubela (Stratham, NH). Carman had a no-hitter through his first four frames while Dubela matched the effort by stranding runners on base in the second and third innings.

Southern Maine got to Dubela in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out RBI single by senior Chris Bernard (Scarborough, ME) to score junior Forest Chadwick (Gardiner, ME) for the 1-0 edge.

In the very next half inning, Daniel Webster threatened to take the lead with back-to-back lead-off singles by senior Tyler Bonin (Litchfield, NH) and classmate Rich Lizotte (W. Warwick, RI), who moved into scoring position on a wild pitch.

But Carman buckled down and used his pin-point accuracy on the mound to get out of the jam. Even after a batter that was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs, Carman jammed the batter at the plate with a line-out to finish off the top of the fifth.

The Huskies gave themselves some breathing room with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 3-0 advantage on RBI singles by Bernard and senior John Carey (S. Portland, ME).

In the bottom of the eighth, senior Tucker White (Deerfield, NH) crushed his Little East Conference best 10th homer of the season for a two-run blast to help give USM the commanding 5-0 margin.

Carman (11-0) completed his first shutout of the season by retiring 11 of his last 13 men as he only permitted two men to reach base in the eighth. He issued two walks and also plunked a pair of batters.

Dubela (8-1) went the distance and absorbed the setback. Dubela gave up five runs (four earned) on eight hits to go with two punch outs while he did not issue any free passes.

Chadwick and freshman Sam Dexter (Oakland, ME) both had two base-knocks each to pace Southern Maine's attack.

Out of the games 11 hits, only two went for extra bases with White's blast and a double by Carey in the eighth.
