Methodist wins opener in extra innings

Methodist defeated Huntingdon in the first game of the 2013 NCAA DIII South Regional today 4-3 in 10 innings. The 6th seeded Monarchs put up a single run in the top of the fourth, before Huntingdon responded with two of their own in the bottom of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. Huntingdon extended their lead to 3-1 with a single run in bottom of the sixth.  Methodist knotted the game a 3 apiece with two runs in the top of the seventh. The game remained 3-3 until Methodist took the lead for good with a single run in the top of the tenth.

Josh Ayers collected his fifth victory of the season for Methodist, after relieving starter Michael Inman in the top of the eigth.  Ayers worked three innings, allowed two hits, one walk, and struck out three.  Inman worked the first seven innings for Methodist allowing nine three earned runs, on nine hits, three walks, and struck out three.  For Huntingdon, Cory Belyeu worked the first 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, three walks, and struck out one.  Belyeu gave way to Joseph Fincher with two outs in the top of seventh.  Fincher worked the next 2.2 innings, allowing two hits, and one run.  Fincher picked up the loss for Hawks, dropping his record to 7-3 on the year.  Neil Lawler got the final two outs for Huntingdon.

The Methodist offense was led by 3B Steven Kirby who was 3-5 with a run scored.  LF Brandon Thigpen was 2-5 with an RBI.  C Chris Power was 1-3 with a run scored and walked twice.  CF Cody Molasky was 1-3 with an RBI and two sac bunts.  The Huntingdon offense was led by CF Evan Agnew who was 2-4 with a double, run scored, walked once, and stole a base.  DH Grant Brown was 2-5 with a run scored.  2B Calib Astin was 2-5 with a run scored and stole a base.  3B Jordan Freeman was 2-4 with a walk.

Methodist will return to action tomorrow at 3:30 against the loser of tonight's Millsaps/Bridgewater game. Huntingdon will take on the loser of the Salisbury/Bridgewater game at 12:00 tomorrow.
