Kean Slips Past Keystone 4-2 Despite Robinson's Two-Hitter

More news about: Keystone

Moosic, PA – Keystone College starting pitcher Patrick Robinson (Goshen, NY/Goshen) pitched a complete game two-hitter and faced the minimum 19 batters over the final 6.1 innings of Friday's NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional winner's bracket game against Kean University, but the Cougars made a four-run second inning stand to advance to Saturday's championship game with a 4-2 victory over the Giants.  Kean, who is ranked 10th in the country and is the top seed in the double-elimination tournament, improves to 37-10 on the season and will play for a bid to the NCAA Division III College World Series on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

11th ranked Keystone, the second seed in the tournament, stranded 12 base runners for the game, while falling to 35-9 this spring. The Giants will take on the winner of Friday night's elimination game between Misericordia University and Ramapo College at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday for the right to play Kean in the championship round.

After Robinson stranded a runner at second in the bottom of the first inning, Gabriel Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Perkiomen School) led off the visitor's second with a hard single to left field for the game's first hit, but was left stranded at first by Kean starter Kevin Herget.

The Cougars then scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the first inning to take the early advantage, using a pair of two out walks to put a pair of runners on before Michael Kendall hit a single down the right field line that scored Ryan Kelley for the game's first run.  Kean then doubled their lead on a throwing error by the Giants that allowed Shane Alvarez cross the plate.  The Cougars pushed their lead to 4-0 as Tyler Smarslok hit a base hit through the right side to bring home a pair of runs.

After Robinson retired the side in order in the bottom of the third inning, Tyler Gurman (Bronx, NY/Lehman) led off the Keystone fourth with a single to center before being replaced at first by Ramirez, who hit into a fielders' choice.  After Ramirez moved to second on a wild pitch, Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) walked to put a pair of runners on bases and Ricky Riscica (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) drove in Ramirez with the Giants' first run of the game with an opposite field single.

After a two-out walk to Austin Straub (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) in the top of the fifth inning, Gurman ripped a single to right field to give the Giants a pair of base runners, but Herget got a strikeout to end the inning.

After allowing four runs in the second inning, Robinson retired the next 10 batters he faced in order before Kean's Nick Ramaglia reached on a throwing error, the Giants second of the game, to start the home sixth, but after recording his fourth strikeout of the game, Robinson got an inning-ending double play.

Kevin Catherina (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Mary (Rutherford)) drew a one-out walk in the visitor's seventh before Straub was hit by a pitch to put a pair of runners for the Giants.  Gurman then ripped a single through the right side of the infield that scored Catherina and advanced Straub to third while Gurman moved into scoring position on the throw as Keystone cut their deficit to 4-2, but Herget escaped without any further damage after getting a flyout followed by a groundout.

After Robinson worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh inning, his fifth-straight inning facing the minimum, McLaughlin hit a one-out base hit up the middle and following  a strikeout, Miquel Castano (Miami, FL/Miami Springs) hit a hard single that deflected off of Herget to put a pair of Keystone runners on with two outs.  Both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, but Herget got Catherina to flyout to the warning track to escape the threat.

Ramirez hit a two-out single to left center in the top of the ninth inning to bring the tying run to the plate, but Molina flied out to deep left to end the ball game.

Herget improved to 9-2 on the season with the complete game win after yielding nine hits and walking five while striking out eight batters on the day.

Smarslok and Kendall accounted for Kean's two hits on the day with Smarslok collected two RBIs on his second inning single and Kendall adding an RBI and a run scored.

Robinson (6-2) suffered the hard-luck loss after allowing just two hits on the day and facing the minimum 19 batters over the last 6.1 innings.  The senior right hander walked two and hit one batter while striking out six batters while going the distance on the mound for Keystone.

Gurman went 3-5 with an RBI to lead the Giants' offense, Ramirez added a pair of hits, with Riscica driving in Keystone's other run.

The Giants remain winless all-time against Kean, falling to 16-0 against the Cougars including a 1-0 decision on March 17th of this season in Union, NJ and Friday's 4-2 decision.

In Friday's opening game, Misericordia blanked Alvernia 6-0 in the day's first elimination game before Ramapo stayed alive with a 3-1 victory over Johns Hopkins.  The Cougars and Roadrunners are playing in an elimination game on Friday night 7:45 for the right to play on Saturday.

Saturday's action will begin at 12:00 p.m. at PNC Field with the winner of Friday night's game between Misericordia and Ramapo facing off against Keystone for the right to face Kean in the championship game at 3:30 p.m.    A winner-take-all game would be played on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. should the winner of Saturday's first game defeat Kean in the 3:30 Saturday game for the regional crown and a trip to the NCAA Division III World Series in Appleton, Wisconsin next week.
