Oxy Baseball Struggles at the Plate in Season Opener

More news about: Occidental

LOS ANGELES — Victor Munoz was solid defensively behind the plate, Mitch Margolis threw three scoreless innings in relief and Alec Strain had a pair of singles and a stolen base.

But the Occidental College baseball team's bats were quiet as Oxy fell to La Sierra in its season opener, 4-0 at Anderson Field on Sunday.

Strain's knocks in the bottom of the fourth inning and in the ninth were Oxy's only two hits.

Munoz threw out a runner trying to steal in the second, stopped several balls in the dirt to prevent runners from advancing and blocked the plate well on an outfield assist by Scott Ericksen in the fifth.

Margolis came in for starter Joseph Kling in the fifth inning and gave up just three base runners and had three strikeouts until passing the ball to David Feasler in the eighth.

La Sierra racked up 15 hits, but Oxy's defense made enough plays to help its pitchers work their way out of jams.

La Sierra scored a pair of runs in the third, one in the fourth and another in the eighth.

David Lara Oliveras earned the win for the Golden Eagles. Kling was charged with the loss.

The Tigers are back in action, hosting Emory College on Feb. 7 at 2 p.m.
