Season-opener for CMS slips away in late innings against Master’s

CLAREMONT, Calif. – For six innings, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team held Master's scoreless. Over the last three innings, Master's scored five runs to defeat CMS 5-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Arce Field in the season-opener for CMS.

Three CMS pitchers in senior Andor Kesselman, senior Chad Hadzinsky and junior John Rizzo combined to pitch five innings of shutout baseball. Both Kesselman and Rizzo didn't allow a hit in one inning and two innings of work, respectively.

Sophomore Clayton Brock pitched a scoreless sixth inning but Master's put three runs on the board in the seventh inning against Brock. Ryan Shackelford led off the inning with a solo home run to left for Master's. Five batters later, a double to left field by Jonathan Popadics pushed Master's lead to 3-0.

Master's added two more runs in the ninth inning to go ahead 5-0.

CMS put runners on base in the seventh (single by freshman C Evan Opperman), eighth (single by sophomore OF Andrew Burgard) and ninth innings (walk by senior IF Michael Erb), but could not push any runs across.

Sophomore IF Jack Witte led CMS with a pair of hits.

Six pitchers for Master's combined to get the shutout.

Next up for CMS is a four-game series at home against Willamette over the weekend, beginning on Friday, Feb. 4.
