Comets Handle Hendrix, 7-1; Improve To 3-0 For 1st Time Since 2008

FRISCO, TX (02.16.14) - The UT Dallas baseball team closed out its weekend event at Dr. Pepper Ballpark with a 7-1 win over Hendrix Sunday.

The Comets, now 3-0 for the first time since the 2008 season, fell behind early but responded with seven unanswered runs, including a four-run fifth frame that turned things UTD's direction.

After giving up a first-inning run without the ball leaving the infield, junior right-hander Calvin Campbell settled down and tossed 7.0 strong innings, scatting five hits with three strikeouts. Campbell allowed just one Warrior base runner to advance past second base after the first frame.

The Comets knotted the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the third inning when Jimmy Norris laced a double down the left-field line, scoring Pierce Fly from first base.

UTD's four-run fifth inning might not have been possible if not for a hard slide into second base by Tanner Gandy on a one-out ground ball by Brandon George. Gander's slide kept a throw to first base from happening, avoiding the inning-ending double and allowing the go-ahead run to score. With runners at the corner, UTD took a 2-1 lead on a wild pitch by Hendrix starter Thomas Weber, and then added a two-run double by Nick Marti, scoring George and J.D. DeLoach, lifting the Comets to a 5-1 advantage.

The Comets tacked on a final run in the sixth on fly ball to right by Wesley Gill followed by a throwing error by the Warriors, allowing Donovan Vess to score from second base.

Clayton Buckner took over the mound to start the eighth frame, scattering one hit with three strikeouts in two innings of work. Marti led the Comet offense, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Norris finished 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI and is now hitting .692 (9-of-13) through three games with seven runs scored.

UTD will play the fourth of seven straight road games to open the season Tuesday afternoon with a non-conference contest at Southwestern. Game time is 6 p.m. in Georgetown.
