KERRVILLE, Texas – Two weeks after they were supposed to begin their season, Pacific could not have been more happy to be in the big skies of Texas as the Boxers split their season-opening baseball games Saturday at Schreiner University's Mountaineer Field.

In their opener, the Boxers received a strong return to the mound from Tyler Kotchik (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.) and three-hit games from Kyle Treadway (Jr., Phoenix, Ore.) and Dan Jaffe (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) as they rolled past Schreiner 11-3.  In the nightcap, a balanced Lewis & Clark offensive attack overpowered a three-hit performance by Nick Garrett (So., San Diego, Calif.) in an 8-5 neutral site loss to the Pioneers.

The games were the first of the season for Pacific after their Boxer Invitational games at Hillsboro Ballpark, scheduled for Feb. 9, were called off due to snow.

PACIFIC 11, SCHREINER 3
The Mountaineers jumped on top early, parlaying an error into two runs in the first inning.  Pacific saw the first three batters reach base in the top of third before Treadway's ground out scored Colin McCusker (Jr., Olympia, Wash.) to opener scoring.  Nathan Suyematsu (So., Tualatin, Ore.) followed with a bunt single that scored Donnie Bradley (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.) and Jimmy Brakebush (So., Portland, Ore.) took a bases loaded walk.

Pacific turned three Schreiner errors into three runs over the next three innings.  Walker Olis (So., Burlington, Wash.) reached on an error to open the fourth and scored on a double by Austin Gallagher (Jr., Lake Oswego, Ore.).  Jaffe reached on an error to open the first, stole second and scored on Ben Duerr's (So., Lebanon, Ore.) single.

The Boxers put the game out of reach with a three-run, two-out rally in the sixth.  Brakebush started the rally when his single scored Treadway, with Suyematsu scoring on the same play by way of error.  Duerr followed it up with a single to score Brakebush.

Schreiner scored their only other run in the seventh when Luke Byley singled and scored on a triple by Chase Valdez.

After missing much of last year with injuries, Kotchik threw six solid innings to earn the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts.  Levi Peterson (Jr., Denver, Colo.) earned the save, allowing one run on two hits in three innings.  Matt Barnett took the loss for Schreiner, allowing three runs on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.

Jaffe led Pacific offensively, going 3 for 6 with three RBIs.  Treadway went 3 for 5 while McCusker, Bradley, Suyematsu and Duerr had two hits apiece.  Ryan Pisseri went 2 for 4 to lead Schreiner.

LEWIS & CLARK 8, PACIFIC 5
Despite having played four less games than Lewis & Clark entering the contest, it appeared early that the Boxers were going have control early.

After allowing one run to the Pioneers in the third, the Boxers rattled L&C starter John Trupin for four runs in the fourth.  Olis and Matt Hopp (Jr., Portland, Ore.) led off with singles and Bradley followed with a triple to score Olis.  Garrett added a single that scored Bradley, Justin Strayer (So., Ventura, Calif.) singled to score Garrett and Lanson Yamamoto's (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) ground out scored Treadway.

Lewis & Clark scored one in the fourth before tying the game in the fifth.  Jacob Burton drove home the first run when his bases loaded single scored Michael Kinkenon and Ben Beck plated two more on a long single.

The Pioneers took the lead for good with a three-run seventh inning.  Burton and Beck each hit into fielder's choices where runners beat the throw to the bag, scoring runs each time.  Eric Hyun accounted for the third run when his sacrifice fly scored Burton.

Trupin earned the win for Lewis & Clark, allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings.  Brakebush took the loss for Pacific, allowing five runs on 10 hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 4.2 innings.  Garrett went 3 for 4 to lead the Boxers at the plate.  Beck, Bradley Lezack, Tommy Massari and Burton each had two hits for the Pioneers.

Pacific continues their Texas trip on Sunday, playing a doubleheader at Texas Lutheran.
