Wesley Slips Past Keystone, 9-8

Hampden-Sydney, VA – Wesley College took advantage of six errors by Keystone College to rally for a 9-8 victory over the 17th ranked Giants on Saturday afternoon at    the 7th Annual Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament at Ty Cobb Ballpark.  The Wolverines level their record at 1-1 on the young season while Keystone falls to 0-2 heading into Sunday's tournament finale against Moravian College.
 
Keystone took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a two-out single by Rob Blanc (Sandy Hook, CT/Trumbull) that brought home Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) who reached on a fielders' choice and advanced to second on an error. 
 
Wesley responded in a big way in the home half of the third inning though, plating five runs on six while taking advantage of one error by the Giants to build a 5-1 lead.
 
Keystone got a pair of runs back in the top of the fourth inning as Chris Muniz (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) hit a double with the brought home Guerrero and Alex Herceg (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) to make it a 5-3 game in favor of the Wolverines.  The Giants went back in front, 6-5, with a three-run fifth as Tyler Gurman (Bronx, NY/Lehman) doubled to bring in Ricky Riscica (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich), who led off the inning with a base hit before Rick McLaughlin (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) drove in the tying run with a single that placed Dan Denton (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North).  Gurman then scored the go-ahead run by taking home as McLaughlin stole second. 
 
The Giants pushed their lead to 8-5 in the top of the sixth as Chris Muniz (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) scored on an error fro Riscica scored on an RBI single off the bat of Gurman. 
 
Wesley leveled the game at 8-8 with three runs in the home half of the seventh inning as RBI singles from Matt Domian and Adam Darling narrowed Keystone's lead to 8-7 before Eric Speidel drove in the tying run with a double. 
 
After retiring the Giants in order in the top of the eighth, Trevor Means scored the eventual game-winning run on a Keystone error, their sixth of the day, in the bottom half of the inning.  Keystone put a pair of runners on base in the ninth inning, but was unable to push home the tying run.
 
Wesley starting pitcher Eric Willey allowed eight runs on 10 hits and three walks while striking out four batters in six innings of work.  Andrew Cooper was credited with the win after allowing thee hits and no runs in the final three innings on the mound for the Wolverines, who recorded 14 hits on the day while committing three errors.
 
Keystone starter Darren Lauer (New Hope, PA/Council Rock North) fanned six batters while yielding five runs on seven hits in five innings of work.  Robert Minaya (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) surrendered three runs on six hits while striking out a pair of Wolverines before turning the ball over to Austin Barefoot (Alexandria, PA/Tyrone Area) who was charged with the loss after giving up one run on one hit while pitching the bottom of the eighth.
 
Muniz went 4-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored to lead the Giants' offense while Gurman added two hits while driving in a pair of runs.  Riscica and Guerrero scored two runs apiece in the loss.
 
Keystone will close out this weekend's tournament on Sunday when they take on Moravian, the defending Landmark Conference champions, at 11:00 a.m.
