SALISBURY, Md. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team was unable to match its success from Saturday afternoon against No. 11 Salisbury University, dropping a pair of games to the Sea Gulls in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday at SU Baseball Field. Salisbury won game one, 7-1, before taking the nightcap, 8-2.
New Paltz drops to 1-2 overall and next competes at the Ripken Experience down in Myrtle Beach, S.C., where it will face off with six different teams in seven games from Friday-Monday, March 7-10. Salisbury rises to 6-2 overall and next hosts Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) rival Wesley College on Wednesday, March 5, at 2:30 p.m.
No. 11 Salisbury 7, New Paltz 1
A three-run third and a three-run fourth helped Salisbury take game one, as the Sea Gulls scattered 10 hits in the victory.
Salisbury got on the board in the first inning, as junior designated hitter Bobby Sanzone ripped an RBI double to left field that scored freshman shortstop Pete Grasso. New Paltz responded in the top half of the second, however, as senior designated hitter Andrew Grann (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) scored on a wild pitch to knot the score at 1-all.
The Sea Gulls led off the home half of the third with back-to-back-to-back doubles, with the final two by senior first baseman Quinn Griffith and Sanzone plating one run each. Junior catcher Austin Barefoot rounded out the inning's scoring with a sacrifice fly to center field with one out.
Salisbury added insurance runs in the fourth, as junior left fielder Jordan Gowe pushed across two runs with an RBI single to center field with two outs, and senior third baseman Ken O'Neill brought in Gowe with an RBI double to right center during the next at-bat.
Senior pitcher Chris Pyz (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) was saddled with the loss, giving up four runs on five hits, a walk and a hit by pitch while striking out one in two innings of work. Freshman pitcher Brett Wisner (Forest Hills, N.Y./Forest Hills) threw one scoreless inning of relief, while junior pitcher Roy Missall (Hemlock, N.Y./Honeoye Central) tossed two scoreless innings coming out of the bullpen as well.

Root factored into scoring once again in the second, plating O'Neill with an RBI single. The Sea Gulls pushed across two more in the frame, as Grasso drew a bases-loaded hit by pitch before Griffith scored junior right fielder Danny Breen with a single to the shortstop.
