MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team split its opening games at the Ripken Experience on Friday, beating King's (Pa.) College, 13-4, before falling by a 9-7 final to Muhlenberg College in the nightcap.
New Paltz moves to 2-3 overall and faces Grove City College tomorrow afternoon in a 10 a.m. doubleheader. King's falls to 0-2 overall and meets up with Lancaster Bible College tomorrow at 6 p.m. Muhlenberg rises to 5-4 overall and squares off with Johnson & Wales University tomorrow at 10 a.m.

New Paltz scored early and often against King's, thanks in part to strong plate discipline. The Hawks, who only had 10 hits in the contest, scored 13 runs across the first three innings to secure the victory.
A six-run first inning put New Paltz up early, and after junior right fielder Richard Guido (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) and senior designated hitter Andrew Grann (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) drew a bases-loaded hit by pitch and bases-loaded walk, respectively, sophomore center fielder Tom Dieckhoff (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) ripped a three-run triple to right center. Senior left fielder Kenny Gentile (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) plated Dieckhoff in the Hawks' next at-bat to complete the inning's scoring.
Just two runs came across for the Hawks in the second, as senior second baseman Steven Morse (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) scored on a wild pitch before senior first baseman David Lostaglio (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro Central) drove in sophomore third baseman Andrew DiNardo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) with a double.
New Paltz broke the game open in the third, scoring five more runs, as Morse, sophomore catcher Tyler Bell (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), DiNardo and Lostaglio all had RBI in the inning, while Gentile scored on a wild pitch.
King's scored the final four runs of the game, pushing two across in the seventh and two across in the ninth. In the seventh, senior third baseman Tim Zaccone and junior catcher Pat Riley scored on a passed ball and a wild pitch, respectively, while junior shortstop Greg Bartle and junior first baseman Anthony Lizzi drove in one run each in the ninth.
Sophomore pitcher Christian Huertas (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) earned the win for the Hawks, lasting five scoreless innings while scattering four hits and striking out six. Freshman pitcher Kevin Frank (Bellmore, N.Y./W.C. Mepham) allowed two runs (one earned) in two innings of work, while junior pitcher Jesse Vahamonde (Huntington, N.Y./Harborfields) permitted two runs in two innings of duty as well.
Junior pitcher Cody Patton shouldered the loss for King's, giving up nine runs in 2 1/3 innings of work.
Dieckhoff led the Hawks offensively with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate that included four RBI, two runs scored and a triple. Lostaglio also had a strong day by going 2-for-2 with two RBI, two doubles and one run scored.
For King's, Lizzi and junior right fielder Joe Zito keyed the attack by each going 2-for-5.

New Paltz scored three runs in the ninth to make a run at Muhlenberg, but the Mules recorded two straight outs with the bases loaded to escape with the victory.
The Hawks started the top of the ninth by loading the bases, as DiNardo singled to right field, freshman left fielder/first baseman Anthony Diana (North Amawalk, N.Y./Somers) walked and Dieckhoff drew a hit by pitch. Guido plated DiNardo with a sacrifice fly before Dieckhoff scored on a passed ball. Bell pulled New Paltz within two with an RBI single to right, and junior first baseman Shaun Hansen (Southold, N.Y./Greenport) singled to the pitcher to reload the bases.
