Tsoumakas Helps RIC Split in Season-Opener

Winter Haven, Fla.-Senior left-hander C.J. Tsoumakas (Hope, RI) tossed five scoreless innings in his 2014 season debut to lead the Rhode Island College baseball team to a 5-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader with Trine University on Friday afternoon at the RussMatt Invitational.

 

Tsoumakas (1-0) allowed just four hits and two walks, while striking out four batters to lead the Anchormen to the four-run victory. Meanwhile, freshman right-hander Jake Roy (Seekonk, MA) conceded just one run on two hits, while striking out two, in two stellar innings of relief.

 

Junior centerfielder Chris Siravo (Wakefield, RI) and sophomore second baseman Dean Beshansky (Cumberland, RI) came around to score in the first inning to put RIC up, 2-0, while junior infielder Tyler Santaniello (Cumberland, RI), senior designated hitter Justin Rainville (Cumberland, RI) and freshman third baseman Sean Getman (Oneonta, NY) all tacked on runs in the fourth inning to help the Anchormen pull away with the victory.

 

Later in the afternoon, Rhode Island College (1-1) fell to Trine, 7-6 (eight innings), in the second game of Friday's doubleheader with the Thunder. The Anchormen jumped out to a 3-0 lead after an error-plagued first inning, but surrendered six runs to Trine (3-5) in the fourth to fall behind by three.

 

Although RIC garnered a trio of runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game, 6-6, Trine senior outfielder Jeff Phillips (Prospect, OH) smacked a walk-off single to left field in the bottom of the eighth that scored junior second baseman Ethan Prebynski (Auburn, IN) and propelled the Thunder to the extra-inning victory. .

 

Junior right-hander Kyle Morvan (Smithfield, RI) provided 3.1 shutout innings out of the bullpen in relief of RIC junior starting pitcher Dylan Cummiskey (Warwick, RI) to keep the Anchormen in the ballgame. Morvan fanned four batters, while walking just one and allowing just two hits. Meanwhile, junior right-hander Joe Brooks (Pawtucket, RI) was tagged with the loss (0-1) for RIC.

 

Santaniello went 3-for-5 on the day with two doubles, two walks, an RBI and two runs scored, while senior left fielder Justin Costa (Cranston, RI) finished 3-for-6 with a double, a walk and two runs scored to pace the Anchormen offensively. Rainville added some production at the dish as well, as he went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.  

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College faces Gordon College on Saturday, March 8 (9 a.m.).
