Tomcats conclude play at Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University of Scranton Saints dealt the Thiel College baseball squad a 7-6 loss Saturday evening at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

Scranton combined for 14 hits in the victory over Thiel. A two-run fourth followed up by a four-run seventh proved to be the difference for the Saints.

The Tomcats managed seven hits in the nightcap, as freshman Austin Van Hoy (Ocean Side, Calif./Ocean Side) finished 2-for-4 with three runs driven in, while sophomoreJosh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) was 2-for-4 with a walk and a RBI.

Sophomore Jaden Nozicka (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) started on the mound, allowing three runs on six hits over three innings of work. Fellow sophomore Pat Duncan(Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) came into the game in relief of Nozicka and suffered the loss. He threw four innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits while striking out two. Another sophomore relief pitcher, Riley Schwertz (Zelienople, Pa./Freedom) put together a solid outing in relief of Duncan. He allowed just one hit in two innings on the hill.

The Tomcats (4-4) are scheduled to return to play on Thursday, March 13 when they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. to take on the La Roche College Redhawks.
