Stevens: Four-Run First Lifts Baseball to 9-3 Win over Ursinus

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 10, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team scored four runs in the first inning and three more in the eighth to come away with a 9-3 win against Ursinus College on Monday afternoon at The Polo Grounds in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Stevens is now 4-1 on the year, while Ursinus falls to 1-3.

The Ducks opened Monday's contest with four runs in the top half of the first inning on a two-RBI double from senior Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.), a single from junior Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.) and a fielder's choice by junior Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.).

Stevens scored again in the third inning on an error to take a 5-0 lead, but Ursinus answered back with its only three runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth.

After another run score for the Ducks in the fifth, they plated three more in the eighth frame on doubles from sophomore Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and Allen.

Allen finished the game with four RBI on a pair of doubles, a run scored and stolen base. Yano went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a steal, while Hennelly and sophomore Nicholas Sieber (Shrewsbury, Mass.) each collected two hits.

On the mound, sophomore Robert Robbins (Tallahassee, Fla.) earned the start and went 4.1 innings and struck out four batters. Robbins allowed five hits and three runs with a walk before being replaced by freshman Zeph Walters (Diamond Bar, Calif.).

Walters picked up the victory in 3.2 innings of work with six punch outs and gave up just three hits. Sophomore Daniel McIntyre (Lakeway, Texas) fired a scoreless ninth inning for Stevens.

The Ducks wrap up their spring trip with a 4 p.m. game against Mount Aloysius College tomorrow.
