MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team fell twice at the Ripken Experience at Griffith Field on Sunday, losing to the Catholic University of America, 7-1, before falling to Albertus Magnus College by a 9-4 final in the nightcap.
New Paltz drops to 4-5 overall with the losses and faces Penn State Berks tomorrow at 10 a.m. in its final game at the Ripken Experience. Catholic moves to 4-3 overall and meets up with Mount Aloysius College tomorrow at 1 p.m., while Albertus Magnus rises to 1-0 overall and contests Lancaster Bible College tomorrow at 1 p.m.

Catholic 7, New Paltz 1
A four-run fifth inning by Catholic broke a 1-all tie, and the Cardinals tacked on two insurance runs in the ninth to come away with the win.
Sophomore left fielder Stefan Poggioli drove in the game's first run in the third, plating sophomore second baseman Andrew Stewart with an RBI single. Sophomore catcher Tyler Bell (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) tied the score in the fourth, pushing across sophomore center fielder Tom Dieckhoff (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) with an RBI single of his own.
Catholic relied on a two-run single by Poggioli and a two-run triple by sophomore right fielder John Palladino to claim a 5-1 edge in the fifth, and in the ninth, freshman pinch hitter Joseph Franchi and Palladino had back-to-back RBI doubles to spell out the final score of 7-1.
Senior pitcher Mike Pastorino (Stormville, N.Y./John Jay) was tagged with the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on four hits while striking out four in 4 1/3 innings of duty. Junior Tyler Mitts (Nanuet, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) provided a solid three innings of relief, scattering three hits while holding Catholic scoreless.
Senior pitcher Kevin Farley picked up the win for Catholic, yielding one run on four hits while striking out five.
Dieckhoff paced the Hawk bats, coming off the bench as a pinch runner and finishing 2-for-2 with a run scored and a stolen base.
For the Cardinals, Poggioli batted 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Palladino hit 2-for-3 with three RBI, a double and a triple.
Albertus Magnus 9, New Paltz 4
Despite outhitting Albertus Magnus, 9-6, in the nightcap, the Falcons plated eight unearned runs off two errors to claim the win.
New Paltz got on the board first in the fourth inning, as junior third baseman Stanley DeLaCruz (Bronx, N.Y./High School of International Business and Finance) scored on an error after a successful double steal. During the next at-bat, junior catcher Mike Sparacino (Commack, N.Y./Commack) plated junior designated hitter Shaun Hansen(Southold, N.Y./Greenport) with an RBI single to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, however, the Falcons scored seven runs, six of which were unearned. The Hawks pushed two runs across in the seventh, with DeLaCruz driving in sophomore center fielder Tom Dieckhoff(Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) on a sacrifice fly before Hansen plated freshman left fielder Andrew Martini (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) with a double. Albertus Magnus tacked on one more insurance run in the home half of the seventh, scoring off an error.
Junior pitcher Brian Solomon (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) took the loss, going 3 2/3 innings. He permitted three runs (one earned) while allowing two hits and four walks.
Junior pitcher Mike Barillaro worked eight innings for the Falcons, scattering nine hits and giving up four runs while striking out four.
