MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team overcame five errors and rapped out 12 hits en route to a 9-7 win over Penn State Berks in its final game at the Ripken Experience on Monday.
New Paltz rises to 5-5 overall, while Penn State Berks falls to 0-1.
New Paltz escaped with the win in the ninth after the Nittany Lions plated two unearned runs. Following an RBI single that cut the deficit to 9-7, Penn State Berks put in a pinch runner, while the Hawks called upon sophomore pitcher Christian Huertas (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) out of the bullpen to retire the potential game-tying run. Huertas, who picked up the win against King's (Pa.) College on Friday, caught Penn State Berks' junior right fielder Connor Corson looking at strike three to record the final out.
The Hawks scored the first run of the game, as sophomore first baseman Chris Baltera (Commack, N.Y./Commack) drew a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the first to put New Paltz on top, 1-0. Penn State Berks responded in the second with an RBI single by senior catcher Dillon Landrigan, tying the score at 1-all. The Hawks received two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead, while the Nittany Lions erupted for a three-run sixth to make it a two-run game. The Hawks added a bit of insurance in the seventh, scoring three runs to take a 9-4 cushion.
Senior pitcher Andrew Grann (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) earned the win, giving up four unearned runs off five hits while striking out six in 5 2/3 innings of work. Huertas, who faced just one batter in the ninth, earned the save.

Sophomore center fielder Tom Dieckhoff (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) was New Paltz's top hitter in the contest, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Junior right fielder/center fielder Richard Guido (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) batted 2-for-5 with two RBI, one run scored, a double and a triple, while sophomore designated hitter Andrew DiNardo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, a double and a stolen base. Notably, junior third baseman Stanley DeLaCruz (Bronx, N.Y./High School of International Business and Finance) finished with three stolen bases.
