#11 Wheaton Falls To #10 Marietta, 19-5

Lyons conclude spring break trip vs. Keene State and No. 5 Wisconsin-Stevens Point 

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.  – The Wheaton College baseball team, ranked No. 11 in the latest D3baseball.com national poll, lost to No. 10 Marietta College, 19-5, on Friday afternoon in non-conference action at the Snowbird Classic. 

Pioneers' freshman Tommy Crowl (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) earned the win on 6 2/3 innings pitched, ten hits, five runs (four earned), zero walks and three punchouts. 

Wheaton senior right-hander Nick Filloramo (Rochester, Mass./Old Rochester Regional) took the loss going three innings, yielding six hits, four runs (all earned), three walks and three strikeouts. 

Marietta claimed a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning by producing three hits and four walks in the frame. Sophomore Kevin Johnston (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) highlighted the offense with a two-run single to right field which scored senior Josh Ungerbuehler (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) and sophomore Dylan Gracia (Middletown, R.I./Middletown)

The Lyons cut into their deficit at 3-1 in the third as junior Tyler Contillo (Monvtille, Conn./Montville) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field for his sixth RBI of the season. Classmate Zach Horton (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) scored after he and junior Zach Bombard (Belchertown, Mass./Cathedral) both singled and advanced one base on a wild pitch. 

Marietta responded with nine runs over the next three innings to push its advantage to 12-1 with junior Chris Winpigler (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora)collecting four RBIs during that stretch. 

Wheaton didn't go away quietly putting up three runs in the sixth for a 12-4 differential. Sophomore Matt Lavanchy (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) drove home Contillo on a sac fly to center, while freshman pitcher Michael Baryski (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) ripped an RBI single up the middle and sophomore Mike Beneduce (North Kingstown, R.I./Moses Brown School) laced a run-producing base hit to right-center. 

Both teams exchanged eight runs over the remaining 3 1/2 innings for a final score of 19-5. 

Lavanchy finished 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs, while junior Justin Peluso (North Reading, Mass./Saint John's Prep) and Bombard registered a pair of hits, respectively. 

Wheaton (6-2) wraps up its spring break trip with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning with Keene State College at 2 p.m. and No. 5 Wisconsin Stevens-Point at 5:30 p.m. Both games will be played at Pat Thomas Stadium in Leesburg, Fla. Marietta (7-3) concludes its trip with a 10 a.m. contest against New Paltz in Port Charlotte, Fla.
