Four Buena Vista pitchers combined to hold Nebraska Wesleyan to three hits, while the offense scored in four of the final five innings, and the Beavers went on to complete the three-game series sweep at Nebraska Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon, 6-0.
Eight different players had at least one hit for BVU in the contest, as the team finished with 12 overall. In the three games, the Beavers chalked up 35 base knocks.
Sophomore Brandon Wessels registered a game-high three hits, whille also scoring twice and driving in one. Senior Weston Foxx and junior Eric Gurbacki each followed with two hits apiece with Foxx also driving in two.
Sophomore Neil Marshall broke a scoreless game with his RBI single in the top of the fifth inning, followed by an RBI groundout from Brandon Wessels to make it 2-0.
Ryan Titman walked with the bases full in the sixth to make it a 3-0 lead before Foxx came through with a big two-run single in the seventh for a five-run cushion. Senior Joe Paletta later capped the scoring in the eight an RBI single to center for his only hit of the game.
Freshman Jake Hadaway made his first career start for the Beavers, and was able to work around five walks in four innings of work to keep the Prairie Wolves off the scoreboard. He allowed just one hit and struck out five.
Junior Scott Harris came on in relief to start the fifth and would go on to earn the win, working two innings and striking out three and walking four. Cam Beatty allowed just one hit and recorded three strikeouts and two walks in his two innings of work before Tyson Valentine worked the final frame, allowing just one hit, while striking out one and walking one.
The Prairie Wolves did threaten in the middle innings, but stranded a pair of runners in the fourth and fifth innings before leaving the bases loaded in the seventh. BVU now has a team ERA of 2.60 through its first seven games.
The win is the fourth straight for the Beavers who are now 6-1 overall. The team is now off until next Sunday, March 23 when it plays the the first two of its five non-conference games while down in Tucson, Ariz. First up for the Beavers is Gustavus Adolphus at 1:00pm CT followed by a 5:00pm CT contest against Carthage College.
