Thomas More Falls, 8-7, to Geneva in PAC Opener

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More College baseball team fell, 8-7, to Geneva College today (Friday, March 21, 2014) in both teams' Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 3-6 overall and 0-1 in the PAC. With the win, the Golden Tornadoes improve to 2-9 overall and 1-0 in the PAC.

Geneva scored one in the first, one in the second, one in the fifth, two in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth, while holding Thomas More to one in the first, three in the fourth and three in the ninth.

Sophomore designated hitter Donovan Pogue (Sharonville, Ohio/St. Xavier) led the team at the plate as he was three-for-five with a run batted-in. Senior center fielder Jason Handley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-four with a RBI and two runs scored.

Sophomore pitcher Brandon Humphrey (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) started the game and had a no decision as he pitched five innings giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits, while striking out four. Senior pitcher Jake Samad (Burlington, Ky./Conner) pitched a third of an inning and gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits to suffer the loss. Freshman pitcher Ken Ruberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) pitched one and two-third innings and gave up one run (earned) on two hits and sophomore pitcher Chris Auer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched two innings and gave up two runs (both earned) on one hit and struck out three.

The two teams close out their three-game series tomorrow (Saturday, March 22) with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Thomas More Field.
