New Paltz Baseball Falls Twice in SUNYAC Opener against No. 8 Cortland

ITHACA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team was swept by No. 8 SUNY Cortland in its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC)-opening doubleheader on Friday at Cornell University's David F. Hoy Field, falling, 13-3, in game one before dropping a 4-0 decision in game two.
 
New Paltz drops to 8-10 overall and 0-2 in the SUNYAC, while Cortland rises to 12-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Both teams will complete the series tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m. at Cornell's David F. Hoy Field.

Cortland's bats erupted often in game one, scattering 18 hits in the victory.
 
After a scoreless first, Cortland pushed across four runs in the second, two of which were unearned. A three-run fourth that was capped by a two-run single by senior first baseman Max Rosing gave the Red Dragons a 7-0 edge. Cortland added more insurance in the middle innings, plating two runs in both the fifth and sixth to swell its lead to 11-0.
 
The Hawks finally got on the board in the seventh, doing so with an RBI single by junior third baseman Stanley DeLaCruz (Bronx, N.Y./High School of International Business and Finance) that scored junior left fielder J.T. Kirk(Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North). After Cortland got one back in the home half of the inning, sophomore first baseman Chris Baltera (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and senior second baseman Steven Morse (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) drove in one run each in the eighth before Cortland's senior left fielder Michael DeCarr spelled out the final score with a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the eighth.
 
Junior pitcher Brian Solomon (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) was tagged with the loss, giving up seven runs (five earned) off nine hits and a walk while striking out five. Cortland's senior pitcher Mark Palumbo earned the win, yielding one run off five hits and two walks while striking out six.
 
Seven different Hawks had a hit in game one, while junior right fielder Donny Castaldo keyed the Red Dragon attack with a 3-for-5 performance that included three runs scored, a double, a stolen base and an RBI.

Cortland did all its offensive damage in the first inning and relied on strong pitching and defense to claim the game-two win.
 
With one out in the bottom of the first, Cortland put together a rally, receiving back-to-back RBI singles from Rosing and senior shortstop Anthony Iacomini to gain a 2-0 edge. Junior second baseman Mitch Hollander plated Rosing with a sacrifice fly, and after a throwing error moved Iacomini to second, senior right fielder Chris Jackson plated Iacomini with a ground-rule double to right field.
 
Neither team was able to score the rest of the game, as Cortland completed the SUNYAC-opening doubleheader sweep.
 
Senior pitcher Chris Pyz (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) shouldered the loss, throwing a complete game in six innings of work. He yielded four runs (three earned) off nine hits and a walk while striking out three. For Cortland, junior pitcher Brandon McClain worked six scoreless innings and permitted just two hits and two walks while striking out two.
 
Sophomore catcher Tyler Bell (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and DeLaCruz each had a hit for the Hawks, while Iacomini paced the Red Dragon bats with a 3-for-3 outing that included an RBI, a run scored and a double.
