ITHACA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team saw another strong outing from SUNY Cortland's pitchers, as the Hawks were blanked, 5-0, by the eighth-ranked Red Dragons in the final tilt of a three-game State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) series Saturday afternoon at Cornell University's David F. Hoy Field.
New Paltz drops to 8-11 overall and 0-3 in the SUNYAC. The Hawks next visit non-conference Vassar College on Wednesday, March 25, at 3 p.m. Cortland rises to 13-4 overall and 3-0 in conference play. The Red Dragons next compete on Tuesday, March 25, at 3:30 p.m. at SUNYIT.
The Hawks pitched by committee—using six different arms in the contest—but Cortland was able to plate five runs on seven hits and five New Paltz errors to post its second shutout in as many games.
The Red Dragons opened scoring in the first, receiving an RBI groundout from junior left fielder Vinny Bomasuto and a sacrifice fly by senior first baseman Max Rosing to take a 2-0 lead. Bomasuto's RBI triple in the second put the Red Dragons on top, 3-0, while Cortland added one more in the fourth off an error on a fielder's choice play. Finally, the Red Dragons put up the game's final run in the seventh, as senior pinch hitter Bryan Marotta drew a bases-loaded walk.
Freshman pitcher Luke Schuessler (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) was tagged with the loss for New Paltz, yielding three runs (two earned) off three hits in 1 2/3 innings of work. Of note, junior pitcher Roy Missall (Hemlock, N.Y./Honeoye Central) threw two hitless and scoreless innings of relief in the middle innings. Sophomore pitcher Brandon Serio picked up the win for Cortland, holding the Hawks scoreless over seven innings while allowing two hits and striking out five.
Senior catcher David Lostaglio (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro Central) put together a strong outing at the plate for New Paltz, going 3-for-4. Bomasuto and senior designated hitter/catcher P.J. Rinaldi each had two hits to lead Cortland.
