Baseball Team Rallies to Top Alma 5-4

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology scored three times in the third inning and once in the seventh to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 5-4 victory over Alma College in college baseball action at Art Nehf Field on Saturday.

Senior Hank Akard (Indianapolis/Ben Davis) finished 4-4 at the plate with three stolen bases to lead the Fightin' Engineer offensive attack.  Akard scored twice, had one RBI and had a steal of home on the afternoon.

Sophomore Kody Alayon (Hammond/Bishop Noll) and sophomore Caleb Kissel (Plainfield, Ill.) contributed two hits each to the nine-hit attack.  Alayon had one double, one single and scored twice, while Kissel had a two-RBI single and scored one run.

Sophomore Daniel Sutherland (Centennial, Colo.) picked up the pitching victory with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.  Sutherland came in with the bases loaded in a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning, pitched out of the jam, then tossed two more scoreless innings for his first win of the season.

Sophomore Alex McNally (Geneva, Ill.) pitched a scoreless ninth inning with one strikeout to capture his second save.

Alma jumped out to a 3-1 lead entering the bottom of the third inning after a two-run home run by Mostafa Ghonim.  The Fightin' Engineers rallied with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead.  Singles by Alayon, Akard and Kissel plated two runs, then senior Andrew Benitez (Mililani, Hawaii) lifted a sacrifice fly to give the Engineers the lead.

Alma rallied to tie the score at 4-4 in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Juan Dominguez, then the two teams battled scoreless until the bottom of the seventh.  Alayon opened the rally with a double, and Akard provided the eventual game winning hit with an RBI single.

Rose-Hulman improved to 5-4 on the season, while Alma dropped to 6-3.  Due to projected cold weather, the Sunday games of the Rose-Hulman Invitational have been cancelled.
