LaGRANGE, Ga. -- Starting pitcher Micah Mabe struck out 10 batters and allowed two runs in a complete-game effort to lead the Covenant baseball team to a 5-2 win at LaGrange on Thursday night.

The game was moved up due to impending rain over the weekend. The two teams will attempt to play the second game of the series on Friday at noon with the final game of the weekend scheduled now for Saturday at noon.

The Scots pick up their seventh straight USA South victory as they move to 10-3 in the league and 14-6 overall. Covenant currently sits in second place in the USA South. LaGrange drops to 8-15 overall and 5-8 inside the conference.

Mabe's (2-0) strong start was similar to last season's effort at LaGrange. Last year, Mabe struck out 13 and allowed three runs in another complete-game. On this night, the lefty gave up two runs through four innings, but then did not allow a hit after the fourth. In all, Mabe scattered six hits with two walks while throwing 115 pitches.

Covenant managed just four hits on the night, but made them count. David Lockwooddoubled home KC Simons and Will Cleland in the first inning to give the Scots a 2-0 lead. Paul Phillips added an RBI single in the seventh inning to make it 5-2.

After LaGrange tied the score at 2-2 in the fourth, Covenant scored twice in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. Perry Rigby led off with a single and Phillips reached on an error to lead off the frame. Two batters later, Chris Rollins reached on the second LaGrange error of the inning to load the bases. Will Carlton took a bases loaded walk that scored Rigby and Simons followed with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Lockwood, Rigby, Phillips and Forrest Hunter each had a hit. Rigby scored two runs, while Simons, Phillips and Carlton each added RBIs.

LaGrange's Jarred Adams (2-4) gets the loss as he allowed two earned runs on three hits in six innings of work. Jim Reed went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the host Panthers.
