Trinity Baseball Manages Split Against Bowdoin

Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity baseball team salvaged a split in a doubleheader with Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon, taking game two, 4-3, in NESCAC East Division action at Campus Field. The Polar Bears won the first game, 6-0, and are now 10-4-1 on the year and 2-1 in conference play, while the Bantams move to 5-10 and 1-2 in league tilts.

In the opener, Bowdoin's Harry Ridge tossed a gem, going six innings, while scattering two hits and striking out four to earn the victory. Henry Van Zant worked a perfect ninth inning for the Polar Bears, striking out the side. On the bump for Trinity, Peter Burrows (Floral Park, N.Y.) went five innings allowing three runs, two of which were earned, while fanning four batters in a losing effort. Freshman Chris Gallic (North Shore, N.Y.) came on in relief of Burrows, working two innings and surrendering three runs.

Offensively, Aaron Rosen led the attack for Bowdoin going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Chad Martin and Erik Jacobsen each had multi-hit games for the Polar Bears. For the Bantams, Adam Moossmann (East Northport, N.Y.) and Carson Kenney (Kensington, Md.) both had one hit.

In the weekend finale, senior Ryan Carr (Cos Cob, Conn.) pitched a stellar 7 and two-thirds innings to earn his second victory of the season for the Bantams in a weather-shortened contest. Carr allowed two runs and struck out five, while giving up five hits. Patrick Carbone (North Wales, Pa.) recorded the final out of the eighth to earn his second save. On the other side, Jay Loughlin was the tough-luck loser, allowing just one earned run in five innings of work.

Trinity opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth as freshman Bryan Wolfe (La Habra Heights, Calif.) hit an RBI double to right center that brought senior Scott Huley (Greenwich, Conn.) trotting home.

The Bantams added a trio of insurance runs in the sixth thanks to timely hitting and a throwing error by the Polar Bears. With no outs and runners on first and second, Daniel Pidgeon (Darien, Conn.) laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown out of play to plate a run. Wolfe followed with an RBI groundout to short and Kenney capped the inning with a two-out RBI double.

Bowdoin battled back into the contest scoring three runs in the top of the eighth. Sean Mullaney smacked an RBI single to make it a three-run contest. Later in the frame, both Aaron Rosen and Chad Martin had two-out run-scoring hits for the Polar Bears.

The Bantams loaded the bases with two outs in the home half of the eighth, but the game was called due to the rain and field conditions.

The Bantams return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 1, traveling to New Hampshire to square off with Keene State in non-conference action. The Polar Bears next face Bates in a NESCAC East play Apr. 4-5.
