Saints Sweep Doubleheader With Thiel to Open PAC Series

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) - The Thomas More College baseball team swept Thiel College today (Sunday, March 30, 2014) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Ross Memorial Park in Washington, Pennsylvania. The Saints won game one, 10-5, and the nightcap 6-2.

With the sweep, the Saints improve to 8-7 overall and 4-1 in the PAC and the Tomcats fall to 6-8 overall and 0-4 in the PAC.

In game one, Thomas More scored one run in the first, three in the fourth, one in the fifth and five in the sixth, while it held Thiel to a run in the second, a run in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh for the 10-5 victory.

At the plate, senior right fielder Cody Makin (Cincinati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-two with a pair of home runs, three runs batted-in and two runs scored, while senior second baseman/left fielder Jason Handley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-three with a home run, a double, four RBI and three runs scored.

Junior pitcher Tim Baldrick (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) earned the win on the mound as he pitched six and a third innings and gave up five runs (all earned) on six hits and walked two. Senior pitcher Jake Samad (Burlington, Ky./Conner) pitched two-thirds of an inning and didn't give up a hit.

In the nightcap, the Saints plated four runs in the third, one in the fifth an one in the seventh and held Thiel to a run in the second and a run in the third for the 6-2 win.

Sophomore pitcher Logan Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) earned a complete game win as he pitched all seven innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits, while he struck out two ad walked two.

Three Saints had multiple hit in the game as Handley was two-for-four with a double and a run scored, sophomore designated hitter Donovan Pogue (Sharonville, Ohio/St. Xavier) was two-for-four with a double and two RBI and junior left fielder Nick Connor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-three with a double and a RBI.

Thomas More and Thiel will close out the three-game PAC series tomorrow (Monday, March 31) with a single nine-inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Tomcat Park in Greenville, Pennsylvania.
