Keystone Wins Home Opener Over Centenary, 11-6

La Plume, PA – Keystone College enjoyed their best offensive output of the 2014 season to date on Tuesday afternoon as the Giants won their home opener over Colonial States Athletic Conference foe Centenary College, 11-6.  The Giants, who have now won four of their last five games and are averaging 9.4 runs scored in the span, improve to 6-9 overall and 3-0 in conference play after completing the regular season series sweep of the Cyclones, who see their record drop to 9-8 on the season and 1-3 in league action. 
 
Centenary jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first at-bats of Tuesday afternoon's game when Kevin Litus hit a two-out double to the wall in left-center that scored Nick Daniele from first before doubling their lead in the top of the second inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Nick Ortiz.
 
Keystone loaded the bases in the home half of the second with nobody out and Rick McLaughlin (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) drove in the Giants' first run of the day on a sacrifice fly to right that allowed Dan Denton (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) to score from third.  Dylan Corl (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch ) then hit a two-out, two-run single to center that plated Tyler Gurman (Bronx, NY/Lehman) and Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) to give the hosts a 3-2 lead.
 
The Cyclones leveled the game at 3-3 in visitor's third when Litus singled home Joe Forcellini, but Keystone went back in front in the bottom half of the inning, 5-3 when Guerrero lift a two-run double down the right field line that scored Domenick Montanaro (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) and Ricky Riscica (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich)Gaston Rojas (Carmel, NY/Carmel) scored the Giants' fourth run when Riscica hit into a fielders' choice in the home fourth.
 
Keystone stretched their advantage to 7-3 in the fifth inning as Gurman came around to score after stealing third before taking home on a throwing error by the Cyclones.
 
Centenary loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the seventh inning and got a run back when Litus hit into a fielders' choice to score Daniele from third, but freshman pitcher Dan Maguire (Ocean Township, NJ/Ocean Township) worked out of the jam without any more damage.
 
Rojas scored on a Cody Darley (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) base hit in the bottom of the eighth inning to push Keystone's lead back to four runs at 8-4.  Chris Bzozowski (Westampton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) then came on as a pinch runner and ripped a two-run double to deep left that scored both Darley and Corl to give the hosts a six-run advantage.  Bzozowski then scored the Giants' 11th tally of the game when Kevin Catherina (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Mary (Rutherford)) grounded into a double play before Centenary closed out the scoring with a pair of runs in the ninth inning.
 
Corl was 3-5 at the plate with a pair of RBIs and a run scored to lead Keystone, who also got a two hit, two RBI performance from Guerrero. 
 
Keystone starting pitcher Darren Lauer (New Hope, PA/Council Rock North) improved to 1-1 on the season after allowing three runs on six hits while striking out three batters over four innings to pick up the win.  Robert Minaya (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) tossed two scoreless innings with one strikeout while Maguire worked through the seventh inning and allowed one run with two Ks.  Adam Sosnowski (Dickson City, PA/Mid-Valley) tossed a scoreless eighth while Elvin Jorge (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) was charged with two runs in the ninth inning before Junior Lazaro (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) came on to record the final out of the contest.  
 
Daniele was 3-5 with three runs scored for Centenary while Litus drove in three runs with two hits.  Cyclones' starter Nick Cavanaugh fell to 0-3 on the season after allowing five runs on five hit in 2.1 innings of work.  The Cyclones used a total of seven pitchers on the day, who yielded a total of 11 runs on 11 hits.
 
Keystone will be right back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Marywood University in a CSAC game scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Christy Mathewson Field.
