WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) went 2-for-3 in his first start in the field but it wasn't enough for the Thiel College baseball team as they dropped a 7-2 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) decision to Waynesburg University Tuesday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets of Waynesburg (7-12) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Waynesburg added a third run in bottom of the third, aided by a leadoff triple and a Thiel error.
 
The Tomcats got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, as sophomore Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) laced a one-out single up the middle. After sophomore Sam Passafiume (Medina, Ohio/Medina) walked and fellow sophomore Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) reached on a fielder's choice, Elko slapped a two-out single to right field to score Passfiume and cut Waynesburg's lead to 3-1.

The Yellow Jackets proceeded to add two runs in the bottom of the fourth and tally a run in the fifth and sixth to secure the game one win.

Elko, who entered yesterday's game against Thomas More College and roped a pinch-hit, RBI-single in his first plate appearance of the season, recorded his first collegiate multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and a RBI. The Middlefield, Ohio native was one of three Tomcats to record multiple hits in game one. Smith collected his sixth multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-3 at the plate, while sophomore Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) added a pair of singles.
 
Sophomore Alex Yoder (Canton, Ohio/St. Thomas Aquinas) took the loss on the hill for Thiel. He pitched four and 2/3 innings in his second start of the season, allowing three earned runs on five hits. He struck out one and walked three.
 
Waynesburg's Brian Resnik picked up the win. He threw all seven innings, allowing two earned runs on nine hits while striking out two.
 
The Tomcats (6-10) will try for the split with the Yellow Jackets, as the two teams square off in game two of the series at 4 p.m.
