Providence, R.I.-Sophomore right-hander Angelo St. Laurent (Cranston, RI), freshman right-hander Jake Roy (Seekonk, MA), and junior right-hander Joe Brooks (Pawtucket, RI) combined to limit Brandeis University to just two runs on six hits, leading the Rhode Island College baseball team to a 3-2 victory over the Judges in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon at Anchorman Field.
Rhode Island College improves to 7-10 on the season after picking up its second straight win, while Brandeis drops to 7-12 for the year.
The Judges jumped on the scoreboard early, as a sacrifice fly from junior designated hitter Cameron Shaw (East Setauket, NY) plated sophomore catcher Connor Doyle (Avon, CT) in the top of the first and gave the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Anchormen answered right back in the bottom half of the frame after junior first baseman Tyler Santaniello (Cumberland, RI) belted a one-out triple into right-center field that scored junior second baseman Dean Beshansky (Cumberland, RI). Moments later, Santaniello came around to score on senior designated hitter Justin Rainville's (Cumberland, RI) RBI ground out, giving the hosts a 2-1 advantage.
Both offenses fell silent until the top of the fifth, when Brandeis bounced back to tie the game, 2-2, following sophomore third baseman Greg Heineman's (Wilbraham, MA) sacrifice fly that plated senior left fielder Brian Ing (Sandwich, MA).
Keyed by junior left fielder Chris Siravo's (Wakefield, RI) leadoff single, Rhode Island College struck for the go-ahead run and took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh. After advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior center fielder Patrick Rogers (Waterford, CT), Siravo came around to score what proved to be the game-winning run on Beshansky's RBI single up the middle.
St. Laurent started for the Anchormen and tossed five solid innings of work on the hill, allowing just two runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out one.
Roy entered the game in the sixth inning and kept the Judges off the scoreboard for three straight frames. The freshman earned his first career win (1-0) after walking just one batter and conceding just one hit in three shutout innings.
Brooks helped seal the victory for RIC, as the junior stepped in and tossed a perfect ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.
Despite going the distance for the Judges, senior right-hander Colin Markel (Scarsdale, NY) suffered the loss on Thursday. Markel (1-2) scattered three runs on eight hits and one walk, while striking out seven.
Beshansky helped carry the Anchormen offensively with a 2-for-4 performance at the dish that included an RBI and a run scored. Siravo and senior right fielder Justin Costa (Cranston, RI) also chipped in with a pair of hits each in the win.
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference action with a doubleheader at home against Plymouth State on Saturday, April 5 (Noon).
